Locums – Fredericksburg, Virginia | Cardiothoracic Surgery Ongoing Coverage
Position Overview: Established cardiovascular program seeking a skilled Cardiothoracic Surgeon for ongoing coverage through the end of 2026. This opportunity offers a balanced mix of clinic, rounding, and light 24-hour call with strong APP support and a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Assignment Details:

Start Date: May 25, 2026 – Ongoing through December 2026
-
Coverage Need: 1–2 weeks per month (Monday–Monday) throughout the year
-
Combination of clinic and 24-hour call coverage
-
Call is light, typically only a few calls during the week
-
No active surgeries scheduled during coverage weeks; rounding responsibilities included
Daily Schedule:
-
Hospital rounding typically between 7:00am – 8:00am (APP present)
-
Clinic typically 2–3 days per week depending on the week
-
Clinic hours generally 9:00am – 3:00pm, variable by day
-
Clinic operates Monday–Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm
-
Afternoons often dedicated to clinic following morning rounds
-
24-hour call requires return to hospital for consults or inpatient needs as necessary
-
Dedicated APP coverage in clinic, hospital, overnight, and weekends
Clinical Responsibilities:
-
Perform a broad spectrum of cardiothoracic surgical procedures including:
-
Coronary artery bypass grafting
-
Aortic surgery
-
Valvular repair and replacement
-
Atrial fibrillation and left atrial appendage management
-
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
-
Endovascular aneurysm repair
-
-
Manage adult acquired and congenital cardiac disease
-
Provide comprehensive pre- and post-operative care
-
Collaborate with advanced practice providers and multidisciplinary care teams
-
Majority of clinic visits are post-operative follow-ups
-
APPs perform initial workups; physician evaluates patients thereafter
Requirements:
-
MD or DO from an accredited medical school
-
Completion of accredited general surgery residency followed by cardiothoracic surgery residency OR accredited integrated general surgery/cardiothoracic surgery residency
-
Board-eligible or board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
-
Current, unrestricted Commonwealth of Virginia license or licensure eligible
-
Current DEA certificate without restriction

Proficiency in a wide range of cardiothoracic procedures including minimally invasive techniques
-
Strong clinical, communication, and interpersonal skills
