Job Purpose:

The San Juan VA Medical Center is urgently seeking two (2) Board Certified/Board Eligible Cardiothoracic surgeons to deliver quality Cardiothoracic surgery, and related Consultancy services for Inpatient, Outpatient, ED, OR, and post Op care to the Veterans and their beneficiaries who receive healthcare treatment at this facility.

Candidates must be fluent in English and Spanish

Hours for Service/Shifts:

Monday and Wednesday: 7.00am – 3.30pm – Either Clinic schedule for evaluation of new patient evaluations to include emergency call back services, or Operating Room Schedule for onsite elective surgery & related procedures: 792 hours total

Monday and Wednesday: 3.30pm to 7.00am; Evening/Overnight on Call coverage for 1,485 hours

Tuesday/ Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Federal Holidays: 265 hours for on call coverage

Background Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience
  • US Citizenship
  • Current unrestricted License from any US State or Territory
  • Graduate of an approved School of Medicine
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
  • Current CE coursework required for maintaining certification
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Current ACLS Certification

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of unlimited on-site Open-Heart Cardiothoracic Surgery services
  • Initial patient evaluation at Inpatient, Outpatient, and Emergency Department (ED) Surgical procedures at Operating Room
  • Post op care
  • Tasks related to Cardiothoracic Surgery Consult (operation not recommended)
  • Permanent Pacemaker Implant (in emergency cases)
  • Pacemaker Lead Extraction (back up)
  • Pericardial Window and/or Pericardiectomy Procedures
  • Back-up for Interventional Cardiology (PCI) cases
