Interventional Radiology Physician
Syracuse, NY (Syracuse VA Medical Center) | Full Time | On-site clinic hours plus on-call rotation (evenings, weekends, holidays)
Position Overview
We are seeking Board Certified or Board Eligible Interventional Radiology physicians to provide onsite clinical and on-call coverage in support of a federal task order at the Syracuse VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. This is a non-personal healthcare services engagement supporting Veteran patients, with services covering the full range of Interventional Radiology procedures to the standard of a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility. A minimum of four credentialed physicians is required to fill this need, sharing onsite clinic and on-call/weekend-holiday-evening (WHE) coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide onsite Interventional Radiology clinical coverage Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
- Provide on-call phone consultation and, when required, in-person coverage during WHE hours (weekday evenings 4:30 PM–12:00 AM; weekends and holidays 8:00 AM–8:00 PM).
- Perform the full range of Interventional Radiology procedures, including angiography; balloon angioplasty/stent placement; biliary intervention; CT- and ultrasound-guided biopsies; central line insertion; chemoembolization; dialysis access and related interventions; drain/tube insertion and exchange; embolization; joint injections; IVC filter placement; lumbar puncture; myelograms; paracentesis; radiologically inserted gastrostomy; thoracentesis; and vertebroplasty.
- Provide consultation and instruction to referring physicians on appropriate indications for interventional procedures.
- Complete dictated reports and documentation within a 24-hour turnaround.
- Review consults and next-day patient cases for a minimum of two hours daily, including pre-procedural planning and order prioritization.
- Provide post-procedure evaluation, follow-up, and clinical consultation regarding complications.
- Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement activities, peer review, and required committee meetings.
Qualifications & Experience
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York State.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible per the American Board of Radiology.
- Accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for Interventional Radiology.
- Current DEA registration and National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Current professional liability (malpractice) insurance.
- Able to obtain and maintain VA credentialing and privileging.
- Prior VA Medical Center experience is a plus, but not required.
Compensation
$410 to $430/hour, depending on experience and certifications. Rate applies to both onsite clinic hours and on-call/WHE coverage hours.

Job Responsibilities
Perform a full range of interventional radiology procedures, including angiography, angioplasty and stent placement, embolization, chemoembolization, IVC filters, vertebroplasty, and dialysis access interventions.
Perform CT- and ultrasound-guided biopsies (lung, liver, renal, lymph node, thyroid, parotid, bone, and bone marrow).
Place, assess, and exchange central lines, drains, and tubes (biliary, nephrostomy, chest, cholecystostomy, abscess, suprapubic, and gastrostomy).
Perform paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar punctures, myelograms, and joint injections.
Administer moderate sedation in line with VA medication policies.
Review consults and next-day cases for at least 2 hours a day, including pre-procedure planning, order prioritization, and placing prep orders.
Advise referring physicians on when IR procedures are appropriate and on treatment plans, in person or by phone.
Provide post-procedure evaluation, follow-up, and management of complications.
Document procedures and give interpretations right after each case, and report test results under VHA Directive 1088.
Give discharge education and follow-up instructions, coordinated with the next care setting.
Qualifications
Current, full, and unrestricted New York medical license, with no past license actions in any state.
Board certified by the American Board of Radiology, with certification kept current.
Able to get VA credentialing and privileging through VetPro, including moderate sedation privileges.
Lives within commuting distance of Syracuse, NY, so the 2-hour onsite response can be met.
Working Hours
Staff the IR clinic onsite Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, and be present at each scheduled start time.
Take on-call phone coverage weekday evenings (4:30 PM–midnight) and weekends and holidays (8:00 AM–8:00 PM), coming in for emergency procedures when needed.
Cover for the VA's staff IR attending during vacation or illness, and report onsite within 2 hours of same-day notice.
Sign in and out daily for time and attendance.
Skills
Vascular interventions: angiography, balloon angioplasty and stent placement, embolization, chemoembolization, and IVC filter placement and retrieval (RFQ).
Non-vascular interventions: biliary procedures, percutaneous drainage, nephrostomy, cholecystostomy, and radiologically inserted gastrostomy (RFQ).
Image-guided biopsy using CT and ultrasound, across multiple organ systems (RFQ).
Dialysis access maintenance and intervention (RFQ).
Central venous access placement and assessment (RFQ).
Spine procedures: vertebroplasty, myelography, and lumbar puncture (RFQ).
Paracentesis, thoracentesis, and joint injections (RFQ).
Moderate sedation administration and patient monitoring (RFQ).
Safe use of fluoroscopy and radiation, including dose management under VHA Handbook 1105.04 (RFQ).
Recognizing and managing procedural complications (RFQ).
Clinical Judgment and Communication
Deciding whether a procedure is appropriate and planning treatment for referred patients (RFQ).
Consulting clearly with referring physicians, both in person and by phone (RFQ).
Pre-procedure planning and prioritizing the case queue (RFQ).
Handling on-call phone triage and deciding quickly when to come in for an emergency.
Explaining procedures, consent, and discharge instructions to patients in plain language (RFQ).
Documentation and Systems
Accurate, timely procedure notes and interpretations (RFQ).
Working in the VA electronic health record (CPRS/VistA) and PACS. Prior VA experience is preferred (RFQ references the VA EHR and VistA).
Communicating test results under VHA Directive 1088 (RFQ).
Quality and Professional Skills
Taking part in peer review, OPPE/FPPE, and QA/QI activities (RFQ).
Following patient safety and infection control practices (RFQ).
Working independently as the lead IR physician with limited backup.
Working well with a multidisciplinary team of technologists, nurses, and referring services.
Flexibility to take same-day coverage and weekend or holiday call (RFQ).
Preferred (Not Required by the RFQ)
Experience in the VA or other federal healthcare settings.
Experience caring for veterans, including patients with complex comorbidities.
A CAQ or subspecialty certification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
