Spencer Hospital is a 50-bed hospital in northwest Iowa offering a wide range of acute care services as well as regional services to include inpatient behavioral health, a cancer center and dialysis services.

The inpatient unit is a 15-bed adult unit. We're looking to add a second psychiatrist to join a mid-level provider to offer care to inpatients. The psychiatrists will also maintain an active outpatient practice. Call is no more than 1 in 4.

Spencer has a collegial medical staff of 40 physicians to include primary care and a range of surgical and other specialists.

Spencer Hospital has been recognized by the The Chartis Center of Rural Health as a Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital in the nation for the past four years.

Spencer is a community of 11,000 people just 30 minutes away from Iowa's premier summer resort destination, Lake Okoboji. There is excellent school choice in the area and Spencer is a safe community to raise a family. Two hours from Sioux Falls, S.D. and three hours from Minneapolis and Des Moines.

This would be an employed position with standard physician benefits. A $100,000 forgivable loan is available that would be forgiven over four years of service.









Spencer, Iowa is in Northwest Iowa and has a population of 11,700 people. All physicians are board certified or board eligible and most practice obstetrics. Call is one in six with a first-call and second-call rotation. The clinic is located across the street from the hospital and has a full service lab and x-ray.


Spencer Hospital is a 99-bed hospital with a 8-bed ICU and 18-bed inpatient mental health unit. They have about 265 births per year and the ER is staffed by emergency medicine physicians. The hospital opened the Abben Cancer Center in 1997 to provide radiation treatments to cancer patients. The hospital opened their Warner Dialysis Center in 1994 and another dialysis unit in nearby Spirit Lake, Iowa in July of 2002. Spencer Hospital medical staff includes 10 family practice physicians, 5 general surgeons, 4 orthopedic surgeons, 2 ophthalmologists, 2 urologists, 1 ENT, 1 radiation oncologist, 2 radiologists, 2 pathologist, 3 emergency medicine physicians, 1 oral surgeon, 1 plastics and reconstructive surgeon, 2 psychiatrists, 1 podiatrist, and 1 dermatologists.

Education Spencer offers five K-6 elementary schools. Three elementary schools are public, one is Catholic and one is Lutheran. There is one public junior high for 7th and 8th graders and one public high school.

Recreation: Spencer has a shopping area downtown and also has an enclosed shopping mall with 27 retail stores and various professional services. The Spencer Family YMCA has 2 indoor pools, running track, handball courts, gymnasiums and a Nautilus Center. A new 2 acre outdoor Aquatic Center complex was built in 1997 which offers swimming lessons and water activities to people of all ages. There are two 18-hole golf courses in Spencer. The cultural opportunities include: Arts on Grand, Park Art, the Parker Historical Museum and the Spencer Community Theater. Spencer is only 15 miles south of Lake Okoboji in Spirit Lake, Iowa which offers boating, skiing, swimming, fishing, 7 golf courses and 26 miles of well surfaced bike trails.
