Position Overview:
We have an immediate need for one Five (5) Psychiatrists to provide mental health care for our veteran population at the VA Medical Center located in Houston, TX and supporting outpatient clinic locations. This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on veterans’ lives while experiencing the mystique of Texas Gulf Coast.
Scope of Care:
Inpatient Care: All Psychiatrist will be required to work in collaboration with Mental Health staff who are part-time or full-time salaried by the VA for inpatient care duties including but not limited to:
- Operating and collaborating Psychiatrist’s patients
- Seeing 1C/1D Psychiatry Service - Ward Patients.
- Admitting
- Diagnosis of patients
- Developing Treatment Plans
- Managing, including the performance of timely treatment
- Discharge/Transfer
- Including all needed medical record documentation
- Outpatient Care
- Seeing all new patient referrals with accompanying medical records
- Seeing severely mental ill patients
- Evaluation disposition E-consult
- Post-discharged follow up
- Patients must be seen by provider in 30 days
Clinic and Residential Care: The locum Psychiatrist(s) shall provide clinical psychiatry services. Clinical duties include direct patient care. Contractor’s Psychiatrist (s) shall operate the clinic, examine patients, and interpret reports as required by the VA. Contractor’s Psychiatrist(s) shall be present and on time for any scheduled clinics as documented by physical presence in the clinic. The contractor's employees will be required to work with VA staff. Should clinic hours need to be changed, VA will provide the locum Psychiatrist(s) a thirty-day advanced notice of the change. Approximate case load is as follows:
- 6 to 6.5 patient bookable hours per day.
- 6 patients for an hour each or roughly 12 patients for one half-hour each; or any combination of one-hour and one-half hour appointment per day totaling 6 to 6.5 bookable patient hours per day.”
Peer Review: The locum Psychiatrist(s) shall provide professional Psychiatry Service with Mental expertise for peer review of selected cases. This shall include, but not be limited to: tort claims, patient family complaints, Mental Health case reviews, peer reviews, and Health case reviews, peer reviews, and benefit appeals.
Other Functions: Scheduling, Communication of Test Results, Discharge education, Following established medications policies, locum Psychiatrist(s) shall follow all established medication policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Must have completed a residency in Psychiatry and be Board Certified / Board Eligible by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology http://www.abpm.org/.
- Must be currently certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Credentialling and onboarding takes approximately 4-6 weeks.
Hours & Schedule:
- Full Time Regular Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm CST
- On Call Hours coverage shift rotations:
- Nights: M-F 4:30pm – 7:30am
- Weekends: Friday 4:30pm – Monday 8:00am
- Holidays: 11 Federal Holidays – each a 24-hour shift 8am – 8pm

- Current CV without any gaps over 30 days since completion of medical school
- For any gaps of 30 days +, written explanations are accepted
- One active, unrestricted Medical License in any state
- Current DEA
- BLS- American Heart Association (AHA) required
- 3 Current References
