Job description

Job description • Adult outpatient psychiatric care within a county jail setting
Full-time locum assignment – 40 hours per week
• Flexible 8- or 10-hour shift options
No call responsibilities
• Average 12–15 patients per day
Initial psychiatric evaluations scheduled for 60 minutes
Follow-up appointments scheduled for 30 minutes
• Documentation completed in CorEMR electronic medical record system

Job Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for adult patients in a jail outpatient setting
• Diagnose and treat mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders
• Provide medication management and treatment planning
• Complete initial evaluations (60 minutes) and follow-up visits (30 minutes)
• Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as clinically appropriate
• Collaborate with nursing staff, therapists, and correctional health teams to coordinate care
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in CorEMR
• Participate in case consultations and interdisciplinary treatment planning
• Ensure care is delivered in accordance with facility protocols, correctional health guidelines, and standard psychiatric practice
• Support patient stabilization, safety, and continuity of care within the correctional health system

Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Psychiatry residency
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry
• Active California medical license (or ability to obtain)
• DEA license or ability to obtain prior to start
• Experience working in correctional health, county jail, or public behavioral health settings preferred
• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and medication management skills
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment
• Excellent documentation and communication skills
• Commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered psychiatric care in a correctional setting

Working Hours

• 40 hours per week assignment
• 8- or 10-hour shifts available
• Typically Monday–Friday schedule
• No call requirements
• Average 12–15 patients per day
• 60-minute initial evaluations
• 30-minute follow-up appointments

Skills

• Strong psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic skills
• Expertise in psychopharmacology and medication management
• Ability to quickly adapt to new clinical environments and workflows
• Experience treating serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders
• Ability to work effectively in a correctional or institutional healthcare setting
• Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams
• Efficient and accurate clinical documentation in electronic medical records (CorEMR preferred)
• Ability to manage moderate patient volumes while maintaining quality of care
• Commitment to patient safety, professionalism, and continuity of care during locum assignments
