Position Overview
A mission-driven healthcare organization is seeking a Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services to join its team in a part-time role (up to 32 hours per week). This position offers an opportunity to provide high-quality, integrated behavioral health care to a diverse and underserved patient population while helping lead and expand behavioral health services. The role is eligible for a sign-on/retention bonus and participation in a clinician incentive plan.
The Medical Director will oversee the medical aspects of the Behavioral Health Department and collaborate closely with clinical leadership to support the integration and growth of behavioral health services. The position is structured with approximately 90% direct patient care and 10% administrative responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive behavioral health care across the lifespan
* Oversee and support behavioral health medical staff on clinical matters
* Collaborate with leadership to integrate behavioral health services within primary care
* Provide guidance and consultation to administration, providers, and nursing staff
* Participate in the development and expansion of behavioral health programs
* Serve as a liaison to community agencies, clinicians, and professional partners
* Represent behavioral health services within the community
* Ensure culturally appropriate, safe, accessible, and high-quality care delivery
* Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation
* Participate in performance improvement and quality initiatives
* Assess patient mental status, acuity, and risk, taking immediate action when necessary
Essential Knowledge and Skills
* Expertise in the assessment and treatment of a full range of mental health disorders
* Proficiency in psychopharmacology and evidence-based therapeutic approaches
* Experience with short-term treatment, crisis intervention, group facilitation, and consultation
* Strong understanding of integrated care models involving collaboration with primary care, psychiatry, and nursing
* Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements including HIPAA and court-mandated reporting
* Familiarity with medical practice operations, documentation standards, and insurance billing
* Strong leadership, organizational, and supervisory skills
* Ability to manage competing priorities and function effectively under stress
Additional Qualifications
* Ability to work effectively with diverse populations across race, ethnicity, language, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, and other special populations
* Knowledge of continuous quality improvement processes
* Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard office software
* Willingness to travel locally for training, collaboration, and oversight of satellite clinics
* Strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills
Education
* Board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry
Experience
* Minimum of five years of direct clinical experience serving community health populations, preferably in an integrated care model
* At least two years of experience supervising and mentoring staff
* At least two years of experience in behavioral health program administration, preferably in a medical clinic setting
* Experience with Medicare and Medicaid program administration preferred
* Demonstrated clinical expertise in evaluations, crisis intervention, diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, and brief cognitive-behavioral therapy across individual, couples, and group modalities
* Proven team-building and leadership skills
Licensure
* Active license to practice psychiatry in the state of Connecticut
