Locum Tenens Psychiatrist-Houston (potential for Hybrid/telemed)

Part-Time or Full-Time | Community Health Center (FQHC) – Texas

We are seeking a Locum Tenens Psychiatrist to provide high-quality, compassionate behavioral health services at a community-based Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Texas. This role supports medically underserved populations and aligns with the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model, emphasizing integrated, team-based care and innovation to improve patient outcomes and staff satisfaction.

This opportunity is available on a part-time or full-time basis and may include telepsychiatry services.

Assignment Overview

The locum psychiatrist will deliver comprehensive psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults, including evaluations, medication management, treatment planning, and ongoing follow-up. The provider will collaborate closely with primary care and behavioral health teams to ensure continuity of care and timely access to mental health services.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Conduct psychiatric evaluations and follow-up visits for pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients

Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications and therapeutic interventions for mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders

Develop and implement individualized treatment plans using evidence-based psychiatric practices

Maintain complete, accurate, and timely psychiatric documentation and progress notes in accordance with clinic policy

Gather, review, and maintain patient medical, psychiatric, and social histories

Order or review laboratory and diagnostic tests as clinically indicated

Collaborate with psychotherapists, primary care providers, psychologists, and other clinical staff as part of an integrated care team

Provide telepsychiatry services as needed

Triage patient telephone calls and provide psychiatric consultation

Ensure continuity of care and appropriate monitoring between patient visits

Make and coordinate referrals to internal and external providers as clinically appropriate

Assist with urgent psychiatric referrals and care coordination

Supervise residents and medical students rotating through the department, as applicable

Participate in peer review, interdisciplinary team meetings, and quality activities

Maintain working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding; participate in training as required

Meet established productivity benchmarks and maintain monthly clinical statistics

Close all patient charts within 48 hours

Participate in after-hours call rotations as scheduled

Maintain flexibility to cover additional clinic sites as needed

Attend clinic and community engagement events when requested

Communicate with school staff and external providers as appropriate and assist with staff education initiatives

Comply with all agency, Behavioral Health Department, and FQHC policies and procedures

Complete administrative assignments as requested by leadership

Report to the Behavioral Health Director

Perform other duties as assigned in support of Clinic’s Mission, Vision, and Values

Qualifications

Qualifications

MD or DO from an accredited medical school

Completion of an accredited Psychiatry Residency Program

Board Certified in Psychiatry

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship (2 years) preferred

Active, unrestricted Texas Medical License

Current DEA registration

BLS certification (American Heart Association)

Ongoing CME in accordance with board and licensure requirements

Prior experience practicing as a psychiatrist, preferably in community or integrated care settings

Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychotherapeutic modalities

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care for individuals with complex mental health needs

Skills

Preferred Skills & Abilities

Bilingual in Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, and/or Spanish (with English proficiency)

Strong written, verbal, and public-speaking skills

Ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations

Reliable transportation and a valid Texas Driver’s License
