Psychiatry Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Overview

The UT Southwestern Medical Center's Psychiatry Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a 12-month immersive program designed for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and Physician Assistants. As the sole academic psychiatry program in Dallas, the fellowship combines rigorous didactic learning and hands-on clinical experiences at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and affiliated sites. This program equips participants with the skills needed to deliver high-quality psychiatric care, offering exposure to a diverse range of patients and diagnoses that mirror the economic, racial, and ethnic diversity of Dallas. Graduates emerge as skilled and culturally sensitive mental health providers, contributing to improved psychiatric care both locally and beyond.

Eligibility Requirements:

EDUCATION

  • Master's degree or higher in nursing, documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. (Must graduate by December 2025)

-OR-

  • Graduate of a master's degree or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program. (Must graduate by December 2025)

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION**

  • Licensure as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas State Board of Nursing. Authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification or Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist

-OR-

  • Certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification required.
  • Licensed by the Texas Medical Board. -AND-
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified by the American Heart Association based on UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers. **Candidates must graduate from their advanced practice program by December 2025. For new or upcoming graduates, board certification and licensure are not required at the time of application. There must be a clear plan to obtain certification and licensure immediately after graduation by March 1, 2026.

Salary

$95,000.00

Job Duties

  • Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
  • Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training. * Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
  • Routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care.
  • Attends and participates in assigned educational activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Accuracy and ability to exercise considerable judgment.
  • Ability to maintain current customer service, clinical, and technical skills.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and provide suggestions for improvements in departmental policy, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficient use of EMR in the delivery of care
