Position Overview

The Rural Health Hub (RHH) is seeking a Tele-Pediatric Rheumatologist to provide high-quality specialty care to children and adolescents with autoimmune, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal conditions in rural and medically underserved Texas communities.

This flexible, part-time role allows the pediatric rheumatologist to work remotely while trained clinical staff are physically present with the patient. The physician will evaluate and manage a broad range of pediatric rheumatologic conditions, provide longitudinal specialty care, and collaborate with families, local primary care providers, hospitals, laboratories, physical therapists, and other specialists.

The Rural Health Hub Model

RHH uses a hybrid-telehealth model that combines remote specialty expertise with in-person clinical support.

Local medical assistants, nurses, or advanced practice providers assist with:

• History, medications, vital signs, growth measurements, and symptom assessment

• Joint and musculoskeletal examination components

• Assessment of swelling, range of motion, gait, rash, and functional limitations

• Connected examination technology when appropriate

• Coordination of laboratory testing, imaging, and other diagnostic studies

• Medication reconciliation and monitoring

• Referrals, follow-up care, and communication with the local care team

This model allows pediatric rheumatologists to provide meaningful ongoing specialty care while using local and regional resources for laboratory testing, imaging, infusions, procedures, rehabilitation, and higher levels of care when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct initial and follow-up pediatric rheumatology visits by telehealth

• Evaluate and manage common pediatric autoimmune, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal conditions

• Develop individualized diagnostic and treatment plans

• Review laboratory results, imaging, prior medical records, medication response, and disease activity

• Order appropriate diagnostic testing and referrals

• Provide longitudinal medication and disease management

• Monitor patients receiving immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive therapies

• Educate and collaborate with patients, parents, and caregivers

• Identify patients requiring urgent, procedural, or in-person evaluation

• Coordinate care with pediatricians, family physicians, hospitals, physical therapists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, nephrologists, and other specialists

• Complete timely documentation and clinical follow-up

Clinical Scope

Patients may include children and adolescents with:

• Juvenile idiopathic arthritis

• Juvenile dermatomyositis

• Pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus

• Vasculitis

• Mixed connective tissue disease

• Scleroderma and localized scleroderma

• Raynaud phenomenon

• Autoinflammatory syndromes

• Periodic fever syndromes

• Recurrent unexplained fevers

• Inflammatory myopathies

• Joint pain, swelling, or stiffness

• Chronic musculoskeletal pain requiring rheumatologic evaluation

• Hypermobility disorders

• Uveitis associated with rheumatologic disease

• Rheumatic manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease

• Sarcoidosis

• Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome

• Abnormal autoimmune laboratory findings requiring specialty evaluation

• Suspected systemic inflammatory or autoimmune disease

Patients requiring infusion therapy, joint procedures, hospitalization, or other advanced interventions would be coordinated with appropriate regional pediatric rheumatology and hospital-based resources.

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree

• Board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Rheumatology

• Active Texas medical license or eligibility to obtain one

• Strong pediatric rheumatology diagnostic and management skills

• Ability to practice effectively through telehealth

• Strong communication skills with children, adolescents, and families

• Strong collaboration skills with local clinicians and care teams

• Commitment to rural and underserved populations

Experience in telemedicine, rural healthcare, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, lupus, autoinflammatory disease, musculoskeletal disorders, or other pediatric rheumatology subspecialty care is welcomed but not required.
