Position Overview
One of our Partners, in NC is seeking a Board-Certified Transfusion Medicine Pathologist to provide locum tenens coverage for their established hospital-based pathology program. The ideal candidate will have 3–5 years of experience in blood bank and transfusion medicine and be comfortable managing both clinical and administrative aspects of transfusion services in a high-acuity academic medical center.
This position includes weekday hours with rotating night and weekend call, supporting a 974-bed Level I Trauma Center and its systemwide transfusion program.
Pay Ranking: Top 15% of 2025 national market rates for Pathology locum physicians.
Estimated Monthly Earnings: $40,000

Skills & Experience

Board Certified in Pathology and Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine (ABP)

Minimum 3–5 years experience in hospital transfusion services

Expertise:

Blood product management and apheresis

Immunohematology and antibody identification
-
Transfusion reaction workups and consultation
-
Oversight of quality and compliance under AABB, CAP, and FDA standards

Preferred: Academic hospital or teaching experience

License: Active North Carolina medical license (required)
Job Responsibilities

Provide daily clinical oversight for blood bank and transfusion services

Review and approve complex antibody panels and component selections

Oversee quality assurance and regulatory compliance (AABB, CAP, FDA)

Serve as medical director for transfusion service as applicable

Participate in hospital transfusion committee meetings and audits

Consult on transfusion reactions and support the massive transfusion protocol

Educate residents, technologists, and clinicians in transfusion medicine principles
