Job description
BOARD CERTIFIED THERAPEUTIC MEDICAL PHYSICIST
VA Northport Medical Center — Radiation Oncology Service, Northport, NY
On-Site | Part-Time, 0.3 FTE (~600 hrs/year) | Pay: $175–$210/hr, DOE
Multi-year opportunity: base year plus four option years through 2031.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Board Certified Therapeutic Medical Physicist to provide part-time, on-site medical physics and dosimetry support to the Radiation Oncology Service at the VA Northport Medical Center, 79 Middleville Road, Northport, NY 11768. This is a non-personal services engagement — you will not be a VA employee. The program is accredited under the National Radiation Oncology Program and follows ACR/ASTRO/AAPM practice standards.
Schedule & Term
- 3 FTE — approximately 600 hours per year on-site
- Base period of performance: 1/1/2027–12/31/2027, with four option years through 12/31/2031
- Credentialing and privileging (VHA Directive 1100.20/1100.21) must be completed before the first duty day
Required Qualifications
- Board Certified in Medical Physics or Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology (ABR); Master's or PhD level
- Licensure with the Board of Licensure for Professional Medical Physicists where applicable, maintained throughout the contract period
- Minimum 2 years of continuous, current clinical experience within the last 3 years
- 2 years' experience performing QA procedures
- 1 year of Therapeutic Medical Physics experience in an ACR-accredited healthcare system
- 1 year of experience with Varian linear accelerators (IX and Trilogy) with BrainLab accessories, per TG-142 standards
- 1 year of Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) experience, including Cone Beam CT, per TG-142 standards
- 1 year of experience with Eclipse treatment planning and ARIA record & verify systems, including 2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT, and IMRT/VMAT (TG-53); must be able to plan these cases independently
- 1 year of IMRT QA experience (MapCheck I/II or equivalent)
- 1 year of experience with Siemens Somatom CT Simulator or equivalent, per TG-66 standards
- Fluent spoken and written English; verifiable education and training history with no unexplained gaps
- Ability to maintain current CME/CEU requirements and report hours for credentialing
Ongoing Compliance
- Annual mandatory VA training: BLS (every 2 years), Active Threat Training, EHR, Government Ethics, Patient Abuse, Patient Rights, Patient Safety, and Prevention of Disruptive Behavior/Workplace Harassment
- Annual submission of current certification documentation to the VA COR
- Maintenance of professional liability coverage as an independent contractor
Compensation
Pay range: $175–$210/hr, depending on experience, board certification level (MS/PhD), and equipment-specific proficiency. This reflects national board-certified physicist benchmarks, the New York metro cost-of-living premium, and a part-time contract premium for specialized on-site coverage. This is a non-personal services contract; the physicist is not a VA employee and is responsible for their own tax withholding, malpractice/professional liability coverage, and benefits.
How to Apply
Submit your CV, ABR board certification, current state licensure (if applicable), professional references, and documentation of experience with the specific equipment and software listed above (Varian linear accelerators, Eclipse/ARIA, IGRT/CBCT, MapCheck, Siemens Somatom CT Simulator). Qualified candidates will be asked to complete the VA credentialing/privileging package prior to a start date.
Equal Opportunity Employer. This is a non-personal services engagement; contract physicists are not VA employees. Pay range shown is not a guarantee of a specific rate; final offers are based on verified experience, board certification, and equipment-specific proficiency.
Job Responsibilities
• Design, optimize, and review radiation treatment plans in conjunction with the radiation oncologist, including DVH-based planning and organ-at-risk dose goals
• Perform independent review of monitor unit (MU) and treatment-time calculations
• Conduct weekly systematic chart reviews for all patients under active treatment, plus a final chart review at the end of each treatment course
• Be present at the treatment machine for each patient's first SBRT/SRS setup and available for all other IGRT/SRS/SRT treatments
• Perform machine and equipment QA/calibration — linear accelerators, CT simulator, and dosimetry systems — per TG-51/TG-53/TG-66/TG-142 standards
• Coordinate annual third-party (TLD) calibration analysis to confirm monthly and annual beam calibrations
• Develop and maintain a quality management program (QMP) for the dosimetry system(s) and produce annual written QMP reports
• Attend and present at weekly peer review conferences covering consultations, re-evaluations, new treatment starts, staging evaluations, and no-treatment decisions
• Provide network/computer administration and troubleshooting support for SRS/SRT and IGRT systems, including backups and coordination with VAMC informatics
• Advise VA staff on specification, evaluation, and lifecycle replacement of linear accelerators, CT simulators, and treatment planning systems
• Document all clinical physics activity in CPRS — consultations, weekly chart-review checks, special physics consultation notes, and treatment discharge documentation
• Support radiation oncology resident training and contribute to an academic teaching environment
• Ensure radiation protection compliance for patients and staff and participate in the facility's radiation safety and quality improvement programs
