Position Type: Locum | Physician – Orthopedic Surgery

Overview

Established orthopedic surgery practice in Mason City, Iowa is seeking a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon for locum coverage. This role offers a mix of clinic, OR, inpatient consults, and trauma call in a hub hospital serving a large regional population.

Practice Highlights

  • Hub hospital serving 16 surrounding counties

  • Population served: 200,000+

  • Trauma Level III

  • 4 Orthopedic Physicians and 7 APPs

  • Supervision of APPs required

  • Average hospital census: ~160 patients/day (primarily consults)

  • Medical imaging, lab, and pharmacy onsite

  • EMR: Epic

  • Teaching opportunities with IM, FM residents, and PA students

Candidate Requirements

  • Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery – REQUIRED (Board Eligible not accepted)

  • Active Iowa license or Active IMLC (LOQ required) – REQUIRED

  • Clean malpractice and background – REQUIRED

  • Self-Query NPDB report (within 30 days of presentation) – REQUIRED

  • Must be able to cover BOTH blocks of dates – REQUIRED

  • Must be able to perform all listed orthopedic procedures – REQUIRED

Schedule & Coverage

  • Dates Needing Coverage (must cover both blocks):

    • March 13 @ 0700 – March 24 @ 0700

    • April 23 @ 0700 – April 28 @ 0700

  • Clinic Schedule: Monday–Friday

  • Clinic Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

  • Call: Yes

    • 24-hour call coverage

    • Follow-up clinic for own call patients

  • Inpatient Responsibilities: Post-op rounding, inpatient and ED consults, OR coverage

Clinical Responsibilities & Required Services

Providers must be able to perform the following:

  • Total joint replacement: hip, knee, shoulder

  • Surgical procedures involving: hand, wrist, knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, and foot

  • Trauma injuries and fracture care

  • Sports medicine and other orthopedic disorders

  • Clinical, surgical, and trauma/orthopedic call coverage

Staffing & Facility Support

  • Physician/Nurse Ratio: 1 nurse per provider

  • Cast Technicians: 3 cast techs / 7 providers

  • Ancillary Staff:

    • 3 reception staff / 7 providers

    • 2 surgery schedulers / 7 providers

  • Exam Rooms: 2 exam rooms per provider

  • Cast Rooms: 3 cast rooms per provider

  • Appointment Length: 10–30 minutes (based on visit type)
