Locums – Santa Maria, California, Oncology Job

Clinical Role:

  • Start Date: ASAP (once credentialed)

  • Duration: Approximately 6 months

  • Schedule: Tuesday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm

  • Target schedule: 16 days per month (no weekends required)

  • Practice setting: Outpatient Oncology Clinic

  • Admissions per day: 0–1

  • Patient volume:

    • 2 oncology consults per day

    • 1 hematology consult per day

    • 12–16 follow-up visits per day

  • This provider will not inherit an existing patient panel

  • Panel will gradually build over time with a ramp-up period during the first 4–6 weeks

  • Reason for coverage: Increase in patient volume while recruiting a permanent physician

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive evaluations of patient history, symptoms, and risk factors related to cancers and blood disorders

  • Order and interpret diagnostic testing including:

    • Complete blood count (CBC)

    • Blood smears

    • Genetic testing

    • Bone marrow biopsies

    • Imaging studies (CT, MRI, PET)

    • Lumbar punctures

  • Review and analyze biopsy results in collaboration with pathology

  • Diagnose and stage hematologic and oncologic conditions

  • Communicate diagnoses and treatment plans with patients and families

  • Order and manage chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments using evidence-based resources such as NCCN, UpToDate, and Micromedex

Practice Environment:

  • General oncology case mix

  • Breast cancer (~30% of oncology volume)

  • Prostate cancer (~15%)

  • OB/GYN, lung, and colorectal cancers (~10–13% each)

  • No induction therapies, bi-specifics, BMT, or CAR-T therapy

  • EMR:

    • OncoEMR (outpatient)

    • Cerner (inpatient charting, lab results, and diagnostic imaging)

  • Support staff includes:

    • Scheduler

    • Clinical Supervisor

    • Medical Assistant

    • Nurse Navigator

    • Social Worker

    • Triage RN

    • Infusion RNs

Requirements:

  • Board Certified Oncology – Highly Preferred (Board Eligible considered if newly out of fellowship)

  • Active California State License – Required

  • Fellowship – Required (Hematology or Oncology accepted)

  • BLS – Required

  • DEA – Required
