Neurosurgery Physician (Board Certified / Board Eligible)

Saint Louis, Missouri (John Cochran VA Medical Center) | Full Time | On-site clinic/OR coverage, Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., plus required weekend inpatient rounding; shared on-call rotation covering nights, weekends, and holidays

Position Overview

We are seeking a Board Certified or Board Eligible Neurosurgeon to provide comprehensive on-site neurosurgical care to Veteran patients at the VA St. Louis Health Care System's John Cochran VA Medical Center. This role combines scheduled clinic and operating room duties with participation in a shared on-call rotation for emergent neurosurgical consults. Care must meet or exceed the clinical standards of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), The Joint Commission (TJC), and the American Hospital Association (AHA).

Key Responsibilities

• Provide on-site clinical and surgical neurosurgery services, including scheduled outpatient clinics (approximately 12–14 patients per clinic) and operating room procedures (a minimum of two decompression spinal procedures or one fusion per OR day).
• Deliver comprehensive operative and postoperative care, including rounding on Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and ward patients, participation in morbidity and mortality conferences, and coordinated discharge education.
• Participate in the shared on-call rotation, providing telephone consultation within 15 minutes and on-site response within 60 minutes for emergent neurosurgical issues; serve as backup alternate on-call coverage as scheduled.
• Complete timely, accurate, and comprehensive clinical documentation in the VA electronic health record in accordance with VA policy and clinical guidelines.
• Participate in required quality assurance / quality improvement activities (including FPPE/OPPE review), patient safety incident reporting, and scheduled staff and quality improvement meetings.

Qualifications & Experience

• Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS).
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or equivalent.
• Eligible for credentialing and privileging at a VA medical facility in accordance with VHA Directive 1100.20 (Credentialing) and VHA Directive 1100.21 (Privileging).
• Strong clinical communication skills; able to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.

Compensation

$444–$501/hour, depending on experience and certifications.
