Location: Huntington, West Virginia — Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center

Scheduling: Regular clinic hours Mon–Fri 8:00am–4:30pm, plus a shared 24/7/365 on-call rotation (weeknights, weekends, holidays, call-back) split among 2–3 credentialed physicians. Only one physician required onsite per day.

Compensation: $181–$201/hour, depending on experience and certifications

Job Description

Provide onsite Nephrology physician services to Veterans at the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center in Huntington, WV, covering inpatient ward and outpatient clinic Nephrology care, including dialysis oversight, as part of a small credentialed physician team sharing a 24/7/365 on-call rotation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Comprehensive clinical Nephrology services: evaluation and management of acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), fluid and electrolyte disorders, and hypertension.
  • Medical evaluation and management of nephrolithiasis and kidney transplant patients.
  • Medical oversight of kidney replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and continuous kidney replacement therapy, including vascular access and procedural complications.
  • Placement of central and femoral venous dialysis catheters and percutaneous kidney biopsy as needed.
  • Bedside consults for non-ambulatory inpatients and outpatient clinic consults, completed within 30 days of the consult request.
  • Chairing the facility's monthly Dialysis Committee and attending monthly staff meetings.
  • Participation in ongoing quality improvement (FPPE/OPPE) activities.
  • Carrying a pager or cell phone at all times while on-call and reporting onsite within 60 minutes of a call-back.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Nephrology (American Board of Internal Medicine or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine).
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Current DEA registration and National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Able to obtain and maintain VA credentialing and privileging.

Benefits

Travel-related reimbursement (lodging, per diem, and rental car at the applicable government rate) is available for providers relocating from outside the local area.

Qualifications

Working Hours

Regular hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm (onsite clinic)

Plus shared on-call rotation (split among 2–3 credentialed physicians, only one physician required onsite per day):

Weeknight on-call: Monday–Friday, 4:30pm–8:00am
Weekend on-call: Friday 4:30pm through Monday 8:00am
Holiday coverage: midnight–11:59pm on facility holidays
Call-back: on-call physician must be available by phone within 15 minutes and onsite within 60 minutes if called in
