The Medical Director is responsible to provide clinical leadership to UnitedHealthcare Global Medical in a variety of roles to support the delivery of safe and effective healthcare. This includes:

  • Being a member of Virtual Health Services physican team based in Aberdeen
  • Providing expert medical advice, guidance and support in specific fields of occupational and environmental health to clients in line with standards, protocols and business performance monitoring and reporting.
  • Providing medical management support to Global Medical client projects
  • Supporting business development activities in the remote and offshore environment

Primary Responsibilities:

  • To support the Global Medical business through the development of effective medical solutions for Clients.
  • Provide clinical governance and oversight of medical care delivered to Global Medical clients and ensure that company standards of service delivery, clinical effectiveness and evidence based practice is implemented on Global Medical projects
  • Support Sales team with client meetings and assist with the design of the technical solution for new projects
  • Provision of clinical expertise to aid company in effective business planning and decision making
  • Review, modify, develop or implement client health programmes and medical policies and assist in ensuring compliance with industry guidance and health industry best practice
  • Liaise with project teams on issues of clinical governance to ensure compliance
  • Regularly visit projects and report operational or medical concerns to the relevant team
  • Identification and assessment of emerging health concerns that may have impact client personnel and / or business continuity
  • Assist with the investigation of clinical critical incidents and healthcare professional competency concerns
  • Assist manpower with the recruitment and selection of healthcare professionals, to include medical technical assessments on prospective contractors and assist with the review of field staff clinical performance
  • Ensure field health professionals are conversant with and understand company medical procedures by conducting medical management briefings with new health professionals
  • Provide doctor to medical professional / providers clinical support to include providing:
    • Clinical advice and assist in the care management of ill or injured patients including assisting in decisions regarding evacuation and assessment of fitness to work
    • Day time OH virtual support to clients for occupational health issues such as declaration of medication consultations with medics, advice on OGUK or other fitness to work issues and remote OH exam sign off and issuing of certifications to clients personnel
  • Act as a Medical Advisor to clients to provide occupational health services including
    • Fitness to work policy/programmes or case management advice
    • Independent clinical review of the management of reported occupational injury / illness cases
    • Review of the treatment and management of clinical cases by company employed or third party healthcare professionals to identify potential process changes or opportunities to improve patient care
    • Conducting audit of client clinics
  • Conduct site audits and assessments of local medical facilties on behalf of clients
  • Provide Locum doctor support for absences such as annual leave, training, site visits and sickness at company run client onsite occupational health clinics
  • To provide support to the VHA programme as required
  • To assist with monitoring quality assurance / quality control of the network occupational health service
  • To provide clinical support to the Senor Medical Director as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Fully registered Medical Practitioner with the GMC
  • Specialist registration and postgraduate professional qualification in Occupational Health (MFOM) or equivalent preferred
  • Experience of working in the field of occupational medicine in the energy and maritime sectors
  • Oil & Gas UK registered doctor
  • Experience in conducting offshore audits with current training to travel offshore
  • Experience in travel medicine / primary care/ pre hospital care would be preferred
  • Keyboard skills and familiarity with common Microsoft packages
  • Leadership & Coaching experience
  • Well-developed communication & Interpersonal Skills
  • Proficiency in information systems software applications and common Microsoft packages

  • Proven track record of establishing and retaining professional relationships with clinical peers
  • Able to negotiate successfully with clients and peers, finding mutually agreeable solutions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate, contribute and work collaboratively as a team member as well as demonstrating leadership and coaching capabilities
  • Ability to adjust and adapt to ever-changing needs and multitask efficiently
  • Ability to collate, analyze information from multiple sources and generate key finding and recommendations
  • Skilled in management of business performance and information as well as personal creativity and innovation.
  • Conducting and applying risk assessment
  • Knowledge of OGUK and maritime e.g. Norwegian, MCA fitness to work standards and industry health requirements, policies and procedures
  • Competencies and Best Practice for High Performers (List competencies and at least two behavioral anchors for each):
  • Previous clinical leadership experience in the remote and offshore industry
  • Knowledge of clinical program design, implementation, and management
  • C suite level Client facing abilities
  • Ability to translate clinical, product, operational design and complex medical situations to actionable and scalable solutions across the broad organization.
  • Ability to influence and lead multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff
  • Ability to travel nationally and Internationally
  • Ability to take call as part of a rotating schedule with other physicians for medical questions and evacuation support
  • Awareness of clinical practice in the global health arena and an understanding of the cultural and operational challenges of global healthcare delivery
