Overview
A leading hospitalist group is seeking an experienced Physician Medical Director to provide both clinical and operational leadership for a hospital medicine program. This role combines administrative leadership responsibilities with active clinical practice, serving as the key liaison between the hospitalist program and hospital administration.
The Medical Director will oversee provider performance, quality initiatives, and program governance while supporting a collaborative hospitalist team dedicated to delivering high-quality inpatient care.

Program Overview
The Medical Director will support and help lead a structured hospital medicine program that includes:

Multiple rounding hospitalist physicians with capped patient census
-
A Medical Director flex role supporting overflow census and complex cases
-
Dedicated daytime admissionist coverage
-
Nocturnist physician and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) coverage
This model allows rounding physicians to focus on patient care and discharges while maintaining strong operational support and leadership oversight.
Clinical Responsibilities

Provide direct inpatient care as part of the hospitalist team

Serve as a flex physician to support patient flow and team workload

Manage additional patient volume beyond the rounding physicians' capped census
-
Assist with complex patient care, consultant coordination, and discharge planning
-
Remain available by pager for clinical and operational support during the day
Leadership Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership

Provide physician leadership for the hospitalist program
-
Serve as supervising physician for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)
-
Mentor physicians and APPs to support clinical excellence
Program Governance
-
Lead and manage hospitalist physicians and APPs
-
Support recruitment, onboarding, and provider development
-
Maintain provider accountability and professional standards
Quality & Documentation
-
Lead initiatives to improve clinical documentation and coding accuracy
-
Provide education and guidance on documentation best practices
-
Monitor program performance and implement improvement strategies
Hospital Collaboration
-
Represent the hospitalist program in hospital committees and leadership meetings
-
Serve as liaison between hospital administration, nursing leadership, and consulting services
-
Support hospital throughput and interdisciplinary care coordination
Key Performance Metrics
The Medical Director will lead performance improvement initiatives focused on:

Length of Stay (LOS)

Hospital Readmission Rates
-
Infection control metrics (e.g., C. difficile rates)

Patient experience and satisfaction scores

Clinical documentation and query response times
Qualifications
-
MD or DO from an accredited medical school
-
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine

Active North Carolina medical license or ability to obtain

Prior hospital medicine experience required

Previous leadership or medical director experience preferred
