Job Description:

Provides leadership and strategic medical direction for Laborist/OB Hospitalists within the Women’s Health Clinical Program and all hospitals with Laborist/OB Hospitalist coverage to advance performance in each of Intermountain Healthcare’s Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care. This position will champion provider growth and development, innovation, continuous improvement, and will be accountable to achieve the system goals established by the Women’s Health leadership team within the Clinical Program, Medical Group and OB/NEO operations lane

Scope:

The Medical Director, OB Hospitalists, Canyons Region is a leadership role with system-wide participation expectations reporting to the Senior Medical Director, Women’s Health, Canyons Region.

The Medical Director is responsible for several core areas.

1. Clinical leadership for the Laborists/OB Hospitalists within all Intermountain hospitals including medical group employed physicians and affiliated physicians,

2. Oversight of clinical operations for Laborist/OB Hospitalist practice within the assigned facilities,

3. Partner with Obstetric/Neonatal Operations Leadership to develop system-wide standards for care provided by Laborists/OB Hospitalists within Intermountain Hospitals

4. Participate in system Women’s Health OB/GYN development team and participate in system projects for creation of Labor and Delivery protocols, best practice, etc.

5. Together with hospital leadership at assigned hospitals, track Key Process Indicators and metrics for system and hospital goals and review them frequently with providers to identify opportunities to improve care.

6. Partner with hospital leadership on Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby unit to implement protocols, initiatives, and safety bundles.

7. Participate in peer review, HEAT, RCA, and Rapid Event Investigations regarding obstetrics complications and provide updates re: lessons learned, updates, and protocol improvement.

8. Address professional or performance concerns as indicated.

9. Optimize patient experiences in all aspects of women’s care and address patient concerns as needed.

10. Educate Laborists/OB Hospitalists practicing within assigned hospitals about system-wide practice standards.

11. Standardize current laborist/OB Hospitalist programs and establish new laborist/OB Hospitalist programs in alignment with the newly approved leveling documents.

The Medical Director works collaboratively with Obstetric, Neonatology and Newborn leaders across Intermountain Health including Specialty-Based Care (OB/Neo Operations), Clinical Programs, Clinical Services, Office of Patient Experience, Hospital Administration, Hospital CMO, Intermountain Medical Group and SelectHealth. Physicians shall be credentialed and privileged on the medical staff of an Intermountain Hospital and will have a clinical practice spending approximately 16 hours/month on administrative duties and the remainder of their time providing clinical care.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Lead provider collaborations and develop personal relationships at each site becoming a key link in communication, attending department meetings, and interacting with the Department Chair/Hospital Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Interact with nursing and operations partners to support implementation of system protocols and initiatives.
  • Monitor and drive key performance outcomes in hospitals with Laborists/OB Hospitalists, reviewing progress with assigned Department Chairs/ Hospital Medical Director of Obstetrics
  • Address performance concerns among Medical Group employed physicians and affiliated providers, meeting with providers as needed to discuss concerns and outline opportunities for improvement.
  • Participate in peer-review for assigned cases.
  • Serve as Medical Group Liaison to provide information and receive feedback.
  • Perform annual professional conversation with assigned Medical Group providers to discuss benchmarking, performance, clinical excellence and to optimize clinic/provider performance – standardize practice, evaluate volumes.
  • Participate in Strategic Planning for Women’s Health
  • Participate in development and implementation of evidence-based care models.
  • Lead specific initiatives as assigned, such as ongoing FHT training for nurses and physicians.
  • Continue to be a clinical practice leader – model of excellent practice.

Minimum Requirements

  • M.D or D.O. with residency or fellowship training and Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology or Maternal Fetal Medicine. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.
  • Licensed or able to be licensed to practice Medicine in the State of Utah.
  • Holds active privileges or qualified to be credentialed at an Intermountain Hospital and SelectHealth.
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially with clinical and non- clinical staff to move others to action and model the vision and values of the organization.
  • 1-3 years of clinical experience with progressive leadership experience in obstetrics and/or gynecology is preferred.
  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$7.25 - $999.99
