Job description

Hourly Salary: about $100/hr - $100/hr (varies depending on years of experience)

We are seeking a dedicated Physician (MD/DO) with a passion for providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients with advanced or life-limiting illnesses. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with an interdisciplinary team to support patients and families during some of their most important moments of care.

Position Highlights:

  • Provide overnight coverage, handling new admissions that arrive during evening and nighttime hours.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for nursing staff and clinical teams for urgent needs overnight.
  • Function in a role similar to a nocturnist, focused on acute symptom management and patient support.
  • Opportunity for both part-time and full-time scheduling.

Schedule Options:

  • Standard overnight shifts: 5:00 PM – 8:00 AM (some flexibility for arrivals closer to 4:00 PM).
  • Shifts typically run 14–16 hours depending on caseload and timing.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate and admit patients referred for hospice or palliative care services during overnight hours.
  • Manage acute symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, agitation, and nausea to ensure patient comfort.
  • Collaborate with nurses, social workers, and chaplains to provide holistic, team-based care.
  • Communicate with families to review care plans, provide updates, and offer guidance on goals of care.
  • Respond to urgent clinical needs and make timely medical decisions overnight.
  • Document patient assessments, treatment plans, and interventions in the EMR accurately and promptly.
  • Provide continuity of care and seamless handoffs to daytime providers.
  • Support patients and families emotionally during crises or changes in condition.
  • Participate in weekend day rounds, including routine visits and admissions.
  • Ensure care aligns with best practices in hospice and palliative medicine while honoring patient wishes.

Requirements:

  • Open to hospitalists or providers with strong acute care backgrounds; palliative fellowship training is a plus but not required.
  • Sensitive, compassionate, and comfortable supporting patients and families facing serious illness.
  • Team-oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in acute or inpatient settings strongly preferred.
