Medical Director, Liver Transplant
Montefiore/Einstein Medical Center

Montefiore Einstein Medical Center for Transplant is seeking an experienced Transplant Hepatologist to serve as Transplant Medical Director. Montefiore Medical Center is a large academic medical center in New York City, and is the primary teaching hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Montefiore Health System is a multibillion-dollar health care system in New York and Hudson Valley including multiple hospitals and clinics throughout the region. Academic appointment in Department of Medicine, Division of Hepatology is offered at Einstein, with the rank based on the candidate’s qualifications. Assistant, Associate, or full Professors are eligible to apply. Montefiore’s liver transplant surgeons, 2 adult Hepatology fellows (one ACGME approved), 2 ASTS transplant surgery fellows, and a dedicated liver medicine service supported by medicine house staff, hospitalists and PA’s. The current Department consists of 4 transplant PA/NPs, 2 clinic LPNs and 1 Hepatology NP. The Center maintains a dedicated med-surg liver transplant floor and state of the art outpatient practice locations. The Liver Transplant Program at Montefiore has been steadily growing since program inception in 2008, including a live donor liver program, a dedicated liver cancer program and clinic, an NIH supported liver research center, a biorepository and clinical research support, and strong hospital support for marketing and outreach. Program quality and outcomes have been outstanding. Given these resources, the Medical Director of liver transplant is a high profile position within the medical center and nationally.
The candidate should have at least 5 years post Fellowship experience in clinical transplant Hepatology and meet UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) criteria as a primary physician of a Liver Transplant Program. The Medical Director responsibilities includes strategic planning, outreach, business development, quality, faculty and staff oversight, regulatory affairs, and research/education in Hepatology and transplant. Therefore, successful candidates will have strong communication and leadership skills, internal motivation and independence, and ability to devise and execute a plan to build the program.
Responsibilities will include, but not limited to
• Oversight of growth initiatives to increase liver transplant referrals and liver transplant activity at Montefiore Medical Center
• Preserving transplant outcomes as measured by SRTR equal to or greater than national averages for one year patient and graft survival.
• With the administrative leadership team and the Director of Abdominal Transplant, oversight of the liver transplant program regulatory and quality activities to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
• With the administrative leadership team and the Surgical Director of Liver Transplant, oversight of liver transplant staff including coordinators, SW, PharmD, Financial Counselors, Nutrition, and Psychology.
• Development and maintenance of clinical and administrative policies in liver transplant, as well as quality indicators.
• Oversight of care delivered on the inpatient liver transplant service including PA staff, floor nursing, housestaff, and fellows engaged in transplant care.
• Participation in outreach satellite office sessions (location to be determined by the Director of Abdominal Transplantation) at least 2 sessions per month.
• Participation in outreach education/CME programs, attendance at outreach dinners and other social events with the referring community.
• Oversight of onboarding and education of junior Attendings and transplant coordinator staff
• Supervision of transplant Hepatologists and transplant PA/coordinator clinical activity throughout all phases of care
• Collaborate with surgical director and transplant administrator regarding finances, budgets, operations, staffing, and strategic planning and identify pathways to increase liver transplant volume
• Oversee review process of transplant-related adverse events and complications in collaboration with surgical program director
• Work with multidisciplinary team and across ancillary departments to address systemic issues and changes in process
