Job Description:
This role involves providing full-spectrum primary care to an adult, incarcerated patient population with a wide range of acute and chronic medical needs. The physician will perform routine and urgent assessments, manage chronic disease, interpret diagnostic results, and deliver evidence-based treatment plans. Care often includes addressing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, minor injuries, infectious diseases, mental-health-related symptoms, and general preventive health needs common within correctional settings. The position also requires collaboration with nursing staff and other providers to ensure continuity of care within a secure, structured environment. This role is ideal for a physician who values autonomy, diverse clinical exposure, and meaningful patient impact in an underserved setting.
Job Responsibilities
• Conduct comprehensive physical examinations and obtain detailed medical histories.
• Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions for an adult correctional population.
• Order, interpret, and act on laboratory tests, diagnostics, and imaging.
• Provide primary care, minor urgent care, sick-call evaluations, and preventive health services.
• Prescribe medications and develop individualized treatment plans.
• Educate patients on health maintenance, disease prevention, and chronic condition management.
• Administer vaccinations and other routine medical procedures.
• Collaborate with and provide clinical guidance to other medical staff as needed.
Qualifications
• Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
• Active New York State medical license.
• Board Certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related specialty (preferred).
• Active DEA registration.
• Current BLS certification.
• At least 1+ year of Primary Care experience or 1+ year of correctional medicine experience (preferred).
• Compliance with all federal, state, and facility-specific medical standards.
• Ability to meet health and screening requirements (CPR if applicable, TB testing, health certificate).
• Willingness to participate in onsite interviews and collaborate per facility protocols.
