Job Description:
This role involves providing comprehensive primary and urgent care services to adults housed in a correctional facility, a population that often presents with chronic conditions, acute medical needs, and limited prior access to healthcare. The physician will conduct evaluations, manage ongoing treatment plans, perform minor procedures, and coordinate care across nursing and administrative teams. Work includes daily clinical rounds, participation in treatment planning meetings, and oversight of medical program processes to maintain quality and compliance. The position also requires close monitoring of hospitalizations and high-risk cases, ensuring continuity of care within a secure environment. Strong communication and sound clinical judgment are essential to succeed in this dynamic, structured setting.
Job Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive medical care including exams, diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow up for inmates/residents.
• Lead and support the facility’s medical program in partnership with the Health Services Supervisor.
• Conduct clinical rounds, participate in treatment team meetings, and oversee unit treatment activities.
• Perform minor procedures (and occasional major procedures if required) within scope of practice.
• Review, audit, and maintain medical records to ensure accuracy, compliance, and confidentiality.
• Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and high risk or potentially catastrophic medical cases.
• Evaluate medical services for quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness while ensuring policy compliance.
• Communicate effectively with staff, administrators, external agencies, and patients to support coordinated care.
Qualifications
• MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
• Licensed to practice medicine in the state of employment.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related specialty.
• Active BLS certification.
• Valid driver’s license.
• DEA registration.
• U.S. citizenship (required for ICE clearance).
• Ability to meet all federal, state, and facility-specific credentialing standards.
• TB screening, CPR, and health certificate as required by contract or regulation.
