Novant Health Cancer Institute - New Hanover Medical Center is currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated board-certified Physicist to complete our team at New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.

When fully staffed, our team will consist of 9 Physicists, 2 Medical Physics Assistants, and 9 Dosimetrists. The main campus is equipped with 1 Varian Halcyon, 1 Varian TrueBeam, 1 Varian IX linac, a Nucletron HDR Afterloader, a Siemens CT simulator, and Sun Nuclear QA physics equipment. VisionRT is used for SGRT. Varian Eclipse and Aria are used for treatment planning and Record and Verify, respectively. Several special procedures are offered at the main campus, such as MLC-based SRS, SBRT, IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, T&O and Vaginal Cylinder, Theranostics (Pluvicto), and GammaTile. The team also covers two nearby satellite centers, each with a Varian linac.

What You'll Do

In this pivotal Physicist III role, the candidate will serve as the Lead Brachytherapy Physicist, acting as the technical authority for the program. The successful candidate will direct clinical physics operations for the brachytherapy program and collaborate closely with supportive physicians to develop a state-of-the-art brachytherapy program, including the construction of a new brachytherapy suite. Additionally, the candidate will support our physics residency program by training future physicists and developing clinical projects.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: Graduate Degree, required. Graduate degree in Medical Physics and graduated from CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Residency Program.
  • Experience: Five years experience in radiation oncology physics, required. Seven years progressive experience in radiation oncology physics, preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Certification in therapeutic medical physics from American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP), required.
  • Additional Skills (required):
    • Caries out core clinical tasks (commissions devices and software for radiotherapy, develops technical and clinical protocols, contributes to the quality program, reviews treatment plans, and consults on clinical care).
    • Candidates must have experience in project management, leading teams, and quality improvement.
    • Provides mentorship to Physicist I and Physicist II.
    • Understands and advises physicians and therapists on proper patient simulation setup and treatment delivery techniques.
    • Follows necessary safety protocols to ensure safe and effective delivery of radiation treatment.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of current best practices for quality assurance.
    • Performs recommended quality assurance procedures to ensure the safe operation of radiation equipment.
    • Performs patient specific quality assurance procedures including but not limited to: -Initial treatment plan checks, IMRT/SBRT/SRS QA, In-vivo dose measurements, and activities that are required to ensure the safe delivery of radiation treatments.
    • Provides special physics consults to radiation oncologists as needed.
    • Performs weekly chart checks in accordance with department policies.
    • Maintains continuing education and professional development.
    • Responsible and accountable for:
      • Compliance with workplace policies and procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
      • Active participation in activities associated with the management of workplace health and safety.
      • Identification and reporting of health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries and property damage at the workspace.
      • Proper utilization of performance (ownership, teamwork communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
