Join a hospital-based emergency medicine team for a locum tenens physician opportunity in Fortuna, California. This role offers exposure to a broad range of emergency cases in a Level III trauma environment with approximately 110 patients seen during a 24-hour period. Fortuna is a welcoming community on California’s scenic Redwood Coast, providing easy access to the natural beauty of Humboldt County and the nearby coastal city of Eureka.

• Guaranteed Hours: 8 hours per scheduled day
• Overtime: Applies after 12 hours per day and requires advance approval
• Orientation: Required the day before clinical coverage begins
• Coverage Dates and Times:
  • October 9–11: 11:00 p.m.–8:00 a.m.
  • October 12: 3:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m.
  • October 22–26: 9:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m.
• Clinical Environment: Level III trauma setting with 24-hour access to anesthesia, cardiac catheterization, general surgery, laboratory, neurosurgery, orthopedics, radiology, vascular surgery, and operating room response

Emergency Medicine Physician Requirements

• At least 1 year of emergency medicine experience required
• Active California physician license
• Active DEA registration
• Board certified or board eligible within 3–5 years of residency
• ABEM or ABEOM certification required; ABIM and ABFM certifications are not accepted
• Current ACLS and BLS certifications
• Clean professional record and eligibility for temporary clinical privileges
• Ability to complete credentialing requirements within the requested timeframe

Locum Tenens Emergency Medicine Responsibilities

• Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the emergency department
• Provide comprehensive emergency medical care in a hospital-only setting
• Manage a diverse, high-volume patient population while maintaining quality and safety standards
• Collaborate with specialty and surgical services available for emergency consultation and support
• Complete accurate clinical documentation and coordinate appropriate admissions, transfers, or discharges
• Participate in scheduled overnight and evening coverage according to the outlined dates and times
