The Opportunity

Most emergency departments ask you to move faster than you can reasonably think. Saint John runs about 34 visits a day across 13 beds — enough volume to stay sharp, not so much that you're triaging your own attention. It's also the only community hospital serving Leavenworth, Lansing and Fort Leavenworth, which produces a case mix a suburban ED never sees: active-duty military and veterans, a federal correctional population, and a senior behavioral health unit on campus. You're the physician in that department, and what comes through the door is yours to work up properly.

What You'll Own

• The department. Single physician coverage with an APP on a mid-shift — every disposition is your call.
• Time-critical stabilization. Certified Acute Stroke Ready, with telemetry, CCU and medical floors behind you and roughly 5 admissions a day.
• A catchment most EDs never see. Military and veteran presentations, correctional medicine, and behavioral health you can actually admit rather than board indefinitely.
• A schedule you can plan around. 12-hour shifts; full-time runs about 120 hours a month.

Must-Haves

• MD or DO
• ABEM or AOBEM board certification
• Active Kansas license, or eligibility in process
• Genuine comfort as the sole physician in a community ED

Nice to Have

• Behavioral health, correctional or military medicine exposure
• Prior Epic experience

What Working Here Is Actually Like

• $365,000–$385,000 annually at full-time volume, independent contractor.
• Malpractice and tail both covered. Tail is the one people forget to ask about until they leave.
• Epic with Dragon. Charting closes out at the end of the shift, not at home at 11pm.
• Physician-owned and physician-managed since 2012. When you escalate a problem, it reaches a physician who still works clinical shifts.
• Not a locums agency. An ongoing program position with a named, stable team.
• A historic riverfront community near Kansas City. Affordable housing, a manageable commute, and a stable population anchored by Fort Leavenworth.
• Licensure is faster than you expect if you're coming from out of state. Kansas participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, so if you already hold a qualifying license elsewhere, adding this one typically runs one to three weeks rather than months.

Straight Talk

Single coverage means long quiet stretches and occasional hours where three sick patients arrive at once and you are the only physician in the building. Some doctors find that the best part of the job. If you'd rather someone else picked up the next chart, this isn't the right department — better to know that now.
