The Opportunity
Providence is the largest hospital in this group — 400 beds in western Wyandotte County, with cardiovascular care, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and a spine and joint center on campus. For an emergency physician that changes the job in one specific way: the patients you'd package and transfer out of a small community ED, you admit here. About 50 to 65 visits a day at roughly 1.6 patients an hour, with 10 to 15 admissions, means moderate acuity and time to think, backed by specialists who are actually in the building.
What You'll Own
- A genuinely well-staffed department. One physician and two APPs on days, one physician and one APP on nights.
- Moderate-acuity decision-making across 24 ED beds plus 4 fast track.
- STEMI and stroke pathways with an Accredited Chest Pain Center behind them.
- Escalation that mostly stays in-house. Neurosurgery, cardiovascular, orthopaedics and spine all on campus, with anesthesia 7a–5p plus call.
Must-Haves
- MD or DO
- ABEM or AOBEM board certification
- Kansas license, or eligibility in process
Nice to Have
- Experience in a hospital with in-house subspecialty backup
- Epic familiarity
What Working Here Is Actually Like
- $365,000–$385,000 annually at full-time volume, independent contractor.
- Malpractice and tail both covered. Tail is the one people forget to ask about until they leave.
- Epic with Dragon. Charting closes out at the end of the shift, not at home at 11pm.
- Subspecialty backup on campus rather than at the end of a transfer call.
- Physician-owned and physician-managed since 2012. When you escalate a problem, it reaches a physician who still works clinical shifts.
- Not a locums agency. An ongoing program position with a named, stable team.
- Kansas City metro with suburban cost of living. Major sports and arts a short drive away, easy regional airport access.
- Licensure is faster than you expect if you're coming from out of state. Kansas participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, so if you already hold a qualifying license elsewhere, adding this one typically runs one to three weeks rather than months.
Straight Talk
At 1.6 patients an hour with APP support on every shift, this is the most comfortable department in our Missouri–Kansas group. If you want the autonomy of a single-coverage rural ED, Leavenworth is the better fit. If you want depth of backup and a bigger hospital around you, this is it.
About Inhospital Physicians (IHP): IHP is a physician-owned and physician-managed group, headquartered in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and operating since 2012, running Emergency Medicine, Hospitalist, Intensivist and post-acute programs for acute-care hospitals, LTACHs and health systems across multiple states. IHP is not a locums agency; these are ongoing program positions with stable, named teams.
Job Responsibilities
Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the Emergency Department across a wide range of medical conditions
Perform medical screening exams and initiate appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment plans
Stabilize patients and manage acute medical emergencies in a timely and efficient manner
Perform procedures within scope of practice based on training and credentialing
Collaborate with hospitalists, specialists, nursing staff, and ancillary teams to ensure coordinated patient care
Determine patient disposition, including discharge, observation, or admission
Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care
Document all patient encounters accurately and efficiently within the EMR
Participate in shift coverage, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled
Follow all hospital policies, clinical protocols, and regulatory requirements
Support quality improvement initiatives and patient safety standards within the department
Maintain required certifications, licensure, and credentialing
Qualifications
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine (ABEM) – required
Active and unrestricted medical license (or ability to obtain) in the State of Kansas
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – required
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – required
ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) – preferred
Current DEA registration (or ability to obtain prior to start)
Eligible for hospital credentialing and privileges
Strong clinical decision-making skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
Skills
Strong clinical judgment with the ability to rapidly assess, prioritize, and manage undifferentiated patients
Ability to perform efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume Emergency Department environment
Proficiency in emergency procedures within scope of practice
