St. Mary’s Health System is seeking a BC/BE Emergency Medicine Physician to join our Emergency Department in Lewiston, Maine in a combined role:

.50 FTE Staff Emergency Physician

.25 FTE Emergency Department Medical Director

Medical Director Responsibilities (.25 FTE)
As Medical Director, you will partner closely with hospital leadership to ensure clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and provider engagement. Responsibilities include:

Clinical oversight of ED providers

Quality improvement initiatives and performance metrics

Peer review and clinical guideline development

Provider recruitment, onboarding, and mentorship

Collaboration with nursing and administrative leadership
-
Supporting patient safety, throughput, and accreditation standards
-
Budgetary input and strategic planning for departmental growth
This role provides meaningful leadership influence while maintaining strong clinical engagement.
Dedicated Behavioral Health Emergency Services
St. Mary’s offers a separate, dedicated behavioral/mental health emergency department staffed with psychiatric nurse practitioners, specialized nurses, and support staff — along with inpatient child/adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry, and chemical dependency services.
This structure enhances safety, improves patient flow, and allows emergency physicians to deliver focused, efficient care.
National Recognition in Geriatric Emergency Care
St. Mary’s Emergency Department has earned Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from the
American College of Emergency Physicians.
