Veterinary Emergency Doctor - Job Description

Compensation:

  • Base Salary: $160,000 + 22% production bonus (total earnings ranging from $200,000 - $300,000 annually)
  • Continuing Education (CE): 100% covered, including online and in-person courses, plus $3,500 for CE-related travel expenses

Shifts:

  • Hours: 7:00 AM 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM 7:00 AM
  • Swing Shifts: Flexible hours (e.g., 10:00 AM 10:00 PM, 2:00 PM 2:00 AM, 4:00 PM 4:00 AM)
  • Shift Frequency: 156 shifts per year (approximately 3 shifts per week, 12-13 per month)
  • Team Size: 3-4 doctors per shift

Locations:

  • Greater Chicago Area (Schaumburg, Buffalo Grove, Naperville, South Loop)
    • Schaumburg: 6-8 new sites opening in January 2025
    • Most hospitals have 10 doctors and 3 leadership roles: Medical Director, Hospital Manager, and Nursing Manager.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Education: DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.
  • Experience: 1 year of emergency or critical care experience preferred but not required.
  • Exotic Animal Experience: Preferred, but willingness to treat exotics is required.
  • Computer Skills: Basic proficiency in practice management, electronic medical records (EMR), and collaboration software.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to read, speak, and hear clearly to understand and complete tasks. Must communicate professionally in person and over the phone.
  • Surgical Skills: Willingness to learn and perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
  • Availability: Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Medical Consultation: Answer medical questions over the phone.
  • Emergency Triage & Treatment: See patients immediately as part of the veterinary emergency triage process.
  • Diagnostics: Perform physical exams and diagnostic tests (e.g., ultrasounds, x-rays, bloodwork, biopsies).
  • Diagnosis & Treatment Plans: Develop and communicate diagnostic and therapeutic plans to clients.
  • Estimates & Records: Prepare and present treatment estimates and maintain accurate medical records.
  • Surgical Procedures: Perform minor and major emergency surgeries.
  • Client Education: Educate clients on aftercare and preventative measures as necessary.
