The Opportunity

  • This role will serve as a GME medical student director, Emergency Medicine core faculty, and a medical student clerkship director position that allows for collaboration and involvement across all our residency programs.
  • As the medical student director, report to the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO) for medical student director responsibilities which include:
    • Collaborate with program directors from our residency programs to provide support for their undergraduate medical education programs.
    • Foster pipeline programs to grow the physician workforce in the region.
    • Set and maintain expectations for medical student responsibilities in patient care activities.
    • Develop mentoring and assistance programs for medical students.
    • Advise and mentor students in the residency application process, assisting in recommendation letter writing where appropriate.
    • Mentor residents as educators and supervisors.
    • Provide and coordinate didactic teaching for medical students.
    • Act as a liaison with our partnering medical schools.
  • As Emergency Medicine core faculty, have the opportunity to define and guide the educational and operational goals of the Emergency Medicine medical student clerkship.
  • As Emergency Medicine core faculty, report to the Emergency Medicine Program Director for core faculty responsibilities which include:
    • Work with the chief residents to develop clear and equitable shift schedules for rotating students.
    • Provide performance feedback to Emergency Medicine rotating students and assist with corrective action when needed.
    • Act as a mentor and educator to fellow faculty and residents to enhance the quality of teaching and guidance that rotating students receive.
    • Contribute to the recruiting efforts of the residency by developing relationships with Emergency Medicine interest groups at nearby medical schools, attending residency fairs and other recruiting events, and helping craft the message delivered to applicants considering our program.

Required Experience and Competencies

  • Current board certification or board eligibility by the ABEM required.
  • Documented educational and administrative abilities and experience required.
  • Must be able to be approved by the Kaweah Health department of GME, appointed in good standing to the medical staff, hold an unrestricted medical license to practice in the state of California, and obtain appropriate faculty appointment in the medical school.
  • Completion of fellowship training related to education (including Toxicology, Ultrasound, CC, Peds, or Education) strongly preferred.
  • Core faculty experience at an ACGME-accredited EM Residency program may be considered in lieu of fellowship training.
  • Leadership capabilities, including excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Requisite specialty expertise and competence in clinical care and teaching abilities.

The Practice

Kaweah Health Medical Center - Visalia, California

  • Kaweah Health Medical Center is a district hospital and an ACS recognized Level III Trauma Center with an annual ED census of around 90,000 and 581 inpatient beds.
  • We are a primary stroke center and STEMI receiving center with a mental health hospital and rehabilitation hospital in Visalia.
  • 24/7 neurosurgery services and interventional radiology
  • As the largest hospital in Tulare County and the only trauma center for a catchment area of nearly 500,000, our residents receive exceptional experience in caring for patients from all walks of life with a wide array of presenting complaints.
  • Home to six ACGME accredited residency programs (Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Transitional Year), two fellowships in Ultrasound and Medical Education/Simulation, and a newly approved Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship.
  • The GME program is affiliated with the University of Southern California and faculty members are eligible for academic appointments with USC.
