Position Summary
The Principal Cardiothoracic Donor Procurement Surgeon plays a vital role in expanding access to viable donor organs for transplant through the use of advanced organ preservation technologies. This position involves performing heart and lung donor procurements while ensuring surgical excellence, quality control, and standardization of donor organ management procedures across the United States.

Position Summary
The Principal Cardiothoracic Donor Procurement Surgeon plays a vital role in expanding access to viable donor organs for transplant through the use of advanced organ preservation technologies. This position involves performing heart and lung donor procurements while ensuring surgical excellence, quality control, and standardization of donor organ management procedures across the United States.
Job Responsibilities
⦁ Perform all aspects of donor heart and lung procurement surgery, including donor organ assessment, bronchoscopy (when required), surgical retrieval, and instrumentation in accordance with established clinical protocols and training standards.
⦁ Conduct donor assessments and maintain the highest level of surgical quality and consistency during all retrieval procedures.
⦁ Travel to donor and recipient sites as needed, with potential assignments at multiple centers for short-term coverage.
⦁ Uphold professional standards in communication and conduct within operating room environments to foster confidence and collaboration with transplant teams.
⦁ Participate in the development and refinement of surgical retrieval and donor organ management protocols for cardiothoracic organs.
⦁ Assist in the training and mentoring of other cardiothoracic surgical retrieval team members, including proctoring junior surgeons.
⦁ Provide surgical assessment feedback to transplant program surgeons to support donor acceptance decisions.
⦁ Collaborate with internal clinical and logistics teams to facilitate the organ allocation process and maintain effective communication channels.
⦁ Perform additional clinical or operational duties as assigned.
Qualifications
⦁ Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent, with a minimum of 5+ years of experience conducting deceased donor cardiothoracic (heart and lung) organ procurements, organ assessments, and/or advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
⦁ Demonstrated ability to perform independent donor organ assessments and retrievals.
⦁ Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure.
⦁ Flexible, adaptable, and able to operate effectively in dynamic clinical environments.
⦁ Proficiency with digital communication platforms and Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Experience
⦁ Prior experience in heart and/or lung transplantation or donor procurement programs.
⦁ Training or fellowship in Cardiothoracic or Transplant Surgery.
⦁ Experience mentoring or proctoring junior surgeons or clinical teams.
Education
⦁ MD or equivalent medical degree with specialized cardiothoracic surgical training.
⦁ Proven surgical experience conducting deceased donor heart and lung procurements and/or advanced cardiothoracic procedures.
⦁ Additional Information
⦁ Frequent travel within the U.S. is required to perform donor procurements.
⦁ Must meet hospital credentialing and health compliance requirements, including applicable vaccination standards.
