Anesthesiologist (Board Certified/Board Eligible)
Albany, NY | Full Time | Onsite coverage Mon–Fri 7:00 AM–5:30 PM, plus rotating on-call nights, weekends, and holidays
Position Overview
The Department of Veterans Affairs, Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, requires a Board Certified/Board Eligible Anesthesiologist to provide onsite anesthesia coverage in the operating room, on hospital wards, and in procedure suites in support of surgical specialties including general surgery, orthopedics, urology, ophthalmology, ENT, and related services. This is a non-personal healthcare services role supporting a state-of-the-art VA surgical program serving Veterans in the Capital Region.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive anesthesia care for scheduled surgical and procedural cases, including preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, and postoperative documentation.
- Be physically present in the operating room at scheduled start times; evaluate patients the morning of the procedure and enter the Immediate Anesthesia Note in CPRS.
- Document all cases in the electronic Anesthesia Record Keeper (ARK) and complete the O.R. record/post-op note in CPRS.
- Participate in on-call rotation covering weeknights (5:30 PM–7:00 AM), weekends (Saturday 7:00 AM–Monday 7:00 AM), and federal holidays, with availability by phone within 15 minutes and on-site within 60 minutes if called back.
- Maintain Board Certification/Eligibility through the American Board of Anesthesiology, current ACLS/BLS, and all VA-mandated annual training.
- Participate in quality improvement activities, peer review, and monthly staff meetings as required by the Chief of Service.
Qualifications & Experience
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA); current ACLS/BLS certification.
- Active or obtainable National Provider Identifier (NPI); current DEA registration.
- Ability to obtain VA credentialing and privileging (VetPro) prior to start of services.
- Fluent in spoken and written English; strong clinical documentation skills.
Compensation
$353–$401/hour, depending on experience and certifications.

Job Responsibilities
Evaluate patients the morning of their procedure and complete pre-anesthesia documentation
Be present in the operating room at scheduled start times and manage intraoperative anesthesia care
Document all cases in the electronic Anesthesia Record Keeper (ARK) and complete post-op notes in the patient's electronic health record
Provide coverage for procedures outside the OR, including cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, GI, and radiology suites, as well as ECT and emergency airway management
Participate in a rotating on-call schedule covering weeknights, weekends, and holidays, with availability by phone within 15 minutes and on-site within 60 minutes if called back
Provide bedside consultative care for admitted patients and participate in e-consults as needed
Supervise and help train health professions trainees (residents/fellows) rotating through the anesthesiology service
Maintain Board Certification/Eligibility, ACLS/BLS certification, and complete all required credentialing and annual training
Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement activities, peer review, and monthly staff meetings
Qualifications
Completed residency in Anesthesiology
Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia (no history of restricted, suspended, revoked, or voluntarily surrendered licensure)
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or equivalent
Active National Provider Identifier (NPI); current DEA registration
Eligible to obtain VA credentialing and privileging (VetPro) prior to start of services
Clean record on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities
Fluent in spoken and written English, with strong clinical documentation skills
Prior experience in a hospital-based, high-acuity anesthesia setting (OR, cardiac, orthopedic, vascular, thoracic, neurosurgical cases) preferred
Experience providing on-call and after-hours coverage preferred
Ability to pass required background investigation and complete VA mandatory training (EHR, HIPAA/privacy, infection control, active threat, etc.)
Working Hours
Overtime: Monday–Friday, as needed for emergent care beyond the core shift
On-call (weeknights): Monday–Friday, 5:30 PM–7:00 AM
On-call (weekends): Saturday 7:00 AM–Monday 7:00 AM
On-call (holidays): 7:00 AM–7:00 AM the following day (24-hour period), covering all federal holidays (New Year's, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas)
On-call response standard: available by phone within 15 minutes; on-site within 60 minutes if called back
Coverage requirement: 7 days a week; minimum of 1 Board Certified/Board Eligible anesthesiologist on-site at all times during business hours
Clinic hours: currently 0800–1630 (subject to revision by Chief of Staff)
Skills
Comprehensive anesthesia management across surgical specialties: general surgery, orthopedics/joint replacement, vascular, thoracic, neurosurgical, plastics, ENT, urology, ophthalmology, dental, podiatry
Cardiac anesthesia and diagnostic/therapeutic support in cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs
Airway management, including emergency/difficult airway situations
Regional and general anesthesia techniques
Acute pain management
Diagnostic transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
Anesthesia care for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) patients
Perioperative risk assessment and preoperative evaluation
Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR/CPRS) and electronic anesthesia documentation (ARK)
Professional/Interpersonal Skills
Strong clinical documentation and record-keeping practices
Effective communication with surgical teams, nursing staff, and residents/trainees
