Job Responsibilities
The Anesthesiologist will be responsible for providing the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. The key responsibilities include:
Delivering a comprehensive range of anesthetic care to patients, including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anesthetic administration, and post-anesthesia care.
Working in all functional areas of the OR, PACU, ICU, ward, and clinic settings as needed.
Conducting examinations, obtaining medical history, and using diagnostic tests to determine surgical risks.
Administering anesthesia or sedation during procedures using various methods.
Coordinating anesthetics with surgeons and providing life support and airway management as required.
Making decisions about post-surgery patient stabilization and recovery.
Qualifications
Critical Care Certified
VA Physician Qualifications:
To be eligible to serve as a VA physician, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Licensure and Registration: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Education: A degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Board Certification: Must be board eligible or board certified in anesthesiology and critical care.
Proficiency in English: Physicians must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as a VA physician.
Working Hours
Call Coverage: Yes, 1 week a month.
Academic Affiliation: No faculty appointment available.
Practice Environment/Description: Inpatient/Outpatient

Work Schedule/Tour of Duty: Mon-Fri, 6:30 am-3:00 pm plus call during the week and weekend.
Skills
Critical Care Skills: Proficiency in managing critically ill patients, including ventilator management, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, sepsis management, and multi-organ failure.
Diagnostic Skills: Ability to interpret diagnostic tests and recognize early signs of patient deterioration in critical care scenarios.
Technical Proficiency: Expertise in performing procedures such as endotracheal intubation, central line insertion, arterial line placement, epidural anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, and peripheral nerve blocks.
Clinical Judgment: Strong clinical decision-making skills to provide timely and effective treatments, considering the patient’s medical history, current condition, and comorbidities.
Communication Skills: Effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team to explain complex medical information, treatment plans, and coordinate care.
Team Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including nurses, surgeons, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and other specialists.
Patient Safety: Committed to upholding patient safety standards, following protocols, and implementing best practices to minimize risk and enhance patient outcomes.
Teaching and Mentoring: Skills to educate and mentor medical residents, students, and other healthcare professionals in anesthesiology and critical care practices.
