K’ima:w Medical Center is seeking an experienced Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide medical leadership, clinical oversight, and strategic direction for the organization’s medical services.

The Chief Medical Officer works directly with the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, and clinical leadership team to plan, implement, and evaluate healthcare programming while maintaining high standards of patient care and operational excellence.
Position Overview
The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for leadership and administration of K’ima:w Medical Clinic services, directing and coordinating medical functions while providing clinical consultation and oversight to physicians and mid-level providers.
The CMO collaborates with all departments within K’ima:w Medical Center to ensure quality healthcare services are delivered to the community.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Leadership
• Provide medical expertise in planning and establishing goals, objectives, and policies to improve medical services
• Ensure services align with the K’ima:w mission, vision, and guiding principles
• Establish standards for provider productivity and quality of care
• Monitor provider performance including GPRA (Government Performance Results Act) measures
• Identify areas of improvement based on utilization studies, trends, and operational needs
• Coordinate credentialing and privileging processes for medical providers
Administrative Leadership
• Promote medical policies and procedures consistent with recognized standards of care, CDC guidelines, and regulatory requirements
• Collaborate with leadership in recruitment of physicians and mid-level practitioners
• Provide supervision and clinical oversight to physicians and advanced practice providers
• Coordinate provider scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage
• Participate in budget monitoring related to medical services
• Participate in governance meetings and report operational updates to executive leadership
Clinical Responsibilities
The Chief Medical Officer will also provide direct outpatient patient care as a family physician, including:
• Comprehensive medical examinations for patients of all ages
• Diagnosis and treatment planning
• Ordering diagnostic tests and imaging
• Prescribing medications
• Performing minor surgical procedures as privileged
• Coordinating specialty referrals and follow-up care
• Building long-term patient relationships and continuity of care
Supervisory Responsibilities
The CMO provides professional supervision for:
• Physicians
• Nurse Practitioners
• Medical secretaries
• Other clinical staff within the Medical Department
Responsibilities include hiring, training, evaluating performance, directing work, and resolving operational concerns in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications
To perform this position successfully, candidates should meet the following requirements:
• Graduation from an accredited medical school (MD or DO)
• Five years of direct ambulatory care experience
• Two years of administrative or leadership experience
• Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in California or another U.S. state
• Ability to provide care across patient age groups
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
Certifications
Candidates must possess or obtain:
• CPR certification within three months of hire
• ACLS certification within six months of hire
• PALS certification within six months of hire
Additional Expectations
The Chief Medical Officer will also:
• Participate in Joint Commission accreditation preparation and quality improvement initiatives
• Maintain compliance with patient confidentiality policies
• Support professional development and continuing education for medical staff
• Participate in continuing education and organizational committees as needed
Working Environment
The role requires working in a clinical environment where employees may be exposed to:
• Blood-borne pathogens
• Infectious diseases
• Airborne particles or chemicals
• Occasional travel outside the local area
The position may also require lifting up to 100 pounds and performing physical tasks associated with patient care.
Additional Employment Information
• 180-day introductory period
• Baseline and random drug testing per Hoopa Tribal Drug & Alcohol Fit for Duty Policy
• Preference may be given to qualified American Indian applicants under the Tribe’s TERO Ordinance.
