Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) located in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a strong academic leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. Eastern Virginia Medical School is an academic health center dedicated to achieving excellence in medical and health professions education, research, and patient care. It is focused on creating and fostering a diverse and cohesive faculty, professional staff, and student body as the surest way to achieve its mission.
Adhering to the highest ethical standards, EVMS strives to improve the health of the community and to be recognized as a national center of intellectual and clinical
strength in medicine and health professions.
Achieving excellence in its core missions of education, research, and clinical care while maintaining its community-based focus is the foundation underlying the overall mission of EVMS. As one of the nation’s only academic medical centers founded and funded by its local community, this was the school’s initial vision when established more than 40 years ago.
Today, EVMS serves as an integral community partner to industry organizations, academic institutions, healthcare entities, and area municipalities, while also being a primary economic driver and healthcare workforce developer for the Hampton Roads region.
The Department of Internal Medicine is one of Eastern Virginia Medical School’s most established academic departments, having been one of the founding graduate medical education training programs of the school when it was established in 1975.
The successful candidate will be able to prioritize, grow, and support the current excellence in patient care; advance methods of medical education; and create opportunities to accelerate innovation and research. They will also identify additional recruits to help grow the scholarly activities of the department.
We are seeking applicants who are board certified in Internal Medicine, eligible for the Associate Professor or Professor rank, and have a demonstrated track record of leadership, program development, strong clinical reputation, and scholarly excellence. This position will report to the Dean of the School of Medicine.
This is an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute towards expanding and building collaborative relationships and helping to grow innovative programs. All applications will be handled in a security sensitive and confidential manner.
With a population of nearly a quarter of a million, Norfolk is the second-largest city in Virginia and is considered to be region’s cultural, historical, educational, financial, and medical centerpiece. The city is home to the world’s largest naval base and one of the busiest international ports in the country. Downtown Norfolk is undergoing a vibrant renewal, as many new office, retail, entertainment, and residential development projects progress. The city is known for its abundance of unique, character-filled neighborhoods and maintains five locally-zoned historic districts. Bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Elizabeth River, Norfolk has no shortage of waterfront views, boasting 144 miles of shoreline.
