Department of Medicine Inaugural Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, Quality, and Strategy

Background: The vision of the Department of Medicine is to promote the health and quality of life of residents in East Texas by providing exceptional clinical care, conducting transformative research, and promoting excellent clinical education. Our clinical mission is to expand access to high-quality healthcare in East Texas. Currently, the Department consists of 97 faculty across multiple divisions. Faculty in the Department provide care to more than 175,000 individual patients each year across both the inpatient and outpatient setting. These clinical activities support our educational mission to develop a diverse and representative healthcare workforce focused on reducing health disparities in East Texas. Currently, we offer post-graduate training for internal medicine residents and fellows in cardiology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary/critical care, and gastroenterology. The new UT Tyler School of Medicine welcomes its first incoming class in July, 2023.

Position Summary: The Inaugural Vice Chair will report directly to the Department Chair and will have a mix of clinical and administrative responsibilities. The Vice Chair will be charged with the following roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop a Departmental strategy to expand clinical service lines in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The Vice Chair will work closely with the Chair and Division Chiefs to develop and implement a clinical faculty recruitment strategy to support our expanding clinical enterprise.
  • Work with the Chair, UTHET Leadership (Chief Medical Officer, Medical Directors, and Senior Clinical Administrators), and Program Directors to promote engagement of faculty, fellows, residents, and students with quality improvement priorities.
  • Develop strategies to promote population health through creative ambulatory quality improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with UTHET ambulatory clinical administrators, staff, and clinical faculty to promote effective outpatient clinical operations.
  • Maintain a clinical practice with both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities within the Department.
  • Candidate requirements: The candidate must meet the following requirements:
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or foreign equivalent
  • Board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine with active and ongoing clinical experience in both the inpatient and outpatient environments.
  • Prior leadership roles within a health system related to clinical operations and/or quality improvement.
  • A commitment to the education and training of medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows.
  • A commitment to support efforts to promote a climate of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the Department.
