Job description
We are currently seeking a qualified Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant to join a high-performing cardiovascular surgery team in a Level II trauma hospital setting. This is a full-time direct hire opportunity supporting an open-heart surgical program and working alongside experienced cardiac surgeons and multidisciplinary care teams.
Position Summary:
The Physician Assistant will provide advanced clinical and surgical support for the cardiothoracic surgery service. Responsibilities include assisting in open-heart procedures, managing perioperative care, and collaborating closely with the surgical and medical teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes. The role requires strong clinical judgment, leadership, and the ability to work in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Schedule:
• Full-time position
• 12.5-hour flexible shifts
• Rotating schedule (days/nights)
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in cardiothoracic surgical procedures, including first assist responsibilities
• Participate in patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests and medications
• Provide inpatient and perioperative patient care
• Collaborate with surgeons, physicians, and healthcare teams
• Deliver preventive, corrective, and therapeutic care across inpatient and surgical settings
• Support clinical leadership and mentorship within the PA team
Qualifications:
• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program (Master’s preferred)
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary clinical environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; Epic experience preferred
Licensure & Certifications:
• Current New York State Physician Assistant license/registration
• NCCPA certification
• Unrestricted DEA license for mid-level providers
• BLS and ACLS certifications
• NYS Infection Control Certificate
• Recent OR experience required
• Cardiothoracic surgery first assist and vessel harvesting experience preferred
Working Conditions:
• Use of appropriate PPE in clinical settings
• Moderate physical activity including standing, bending, and lifting
• Ability to maintain dexterity for surgical and clinical procedures
