Responsibilities and Duties
- Assess, diagnose, and monitor patients in ambulatory breast surgical oncology
- Promote health and protection from disease in the surgical setting
- Manage pre-, intra-, and post-operative care, including developing treatment plans and providing health counseling
- Assist in surgery and perform basic surgical procedures under supervision
- Conduct history and physical exams
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests and therapeutic modalities
- Implement therapeutic interventions for specific conditions as appropriate
- Perform arterial puncture and blood gas sampling
- Provide care for superficial wounds and minor surgical procedures, including debridement, incision, and drainage of superficial abscesses
- Insert and remove non-weighted nasogastric or oro-gastric tubes
- Perform anoscopy, harvest and place skin grafts, and participate in volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques
- Remove chest tubes, arterial catheters, central venous catheters, and drains
- Apply and remove surgical staples and select appropriate wound dressings
- Act as surgical first assistant, including deep and simple tissue closure/cautery and application of surgical appliances
- Administer injectable local anesthetics and perform basic blocks
- Perform urinary bladder catheterization and venous punctures
- Provide wound care, including wound vacuum placement
Additional Information
- New York license required
- Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) certification required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certifications required
- Experience in ambulatory breast surgical oncology and surgical care preferred
