Responsibilities:

General Overview:

Physician Assistant assists the Physician. Conducts examinations of new patients, writes treatment plans, performs and interprets diagnostic tests and conducts outpatient procedures. Assists in conducting hospital rounds, tasks and other procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Privacy and Security rules outlined in the HIPAA guidelines
  • Successfully completes the mandatory three day H+H orientation
  • Adheres and conforms to all hospital and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Intake patient’s medical history
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses
  • Orders and interprets tests
  • Counsels on preventive healthcare
  • Assists in surgery
  • Writes prescriptions
  • Provides direct outpatient and inpatient care under Attending supervision
  • Participates as assistant in both in-patient and out-patient surgeries and facilitates in the post-operative care regarding prescriptions and arranging follow up care
  • Participates in assigned medical adult and pediatric clinics as a healthcare provider/extender
  • Responsible for medical evaluation and management according to accepted protocol
  • Provides initial visits and revisit assessments
  • Establishes plan of care with patient
  • Utilizes medical/surgical consultation and/or referrals appropriately when needed and collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient services
  • Provides relevant health supervision and education
  • Admits and discharges patients to and from Surgery service
  • Evaluates, performs the history and physical examinations
  • Orders and interprets radiological and laboratory tests
  • Participates in daily rounds and note writing of all Surgery in-patients and consultations
  • Consults and collaborates with other Medical/Surgical and Psychiatric services as necessary to optimize patient care within Surgery guidelines
  • Participates in assigned on call coverage
  • Thoroughly explains each procedure to patient
  • Practices sterile technique to prevent cross contamination to patients and instruments and adheres to the hospital’s infection control guidelines
  • Identifies problems and communicates to immediate supervisor; offers appropriate solutions
  • Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all equipment within the department
  • Participates in quality control procedures and quality assurance
  • Prepares daily work log as required
  • Adheres to the departmental attendance policy
  • Participates in identified professional organizations, external meetings and seminars, and film critique in-service activities as required to maintain professional acumen
  • Assists in departmental orientation and training of new hires and students
  • All other duties as required by the department

Qualifications:

  • Current New York State license and registration as a Physician Assistant
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences or a related field
  • Graduation and accreditation from a 2 year Physician’s Assistant program
