Locums – Altoona, Pennsylvania, Cardiac Surgery NP/PA Job

Location: Altoona, Pennsylvania Position Type: Locum Tenens

We are seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with a cardiac surgery background for a locum tenens opportunity in Altoona, PA. This role includes a mix of inpatient, outpatient, ICU, and potential OR responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing post-operative cardiac surgery patients and working collaboratively with cardiac and thoracic surgery teams.

• Morning ICU rounding on post-operative cardiac surgery patients

• Inpatient floor consults and ongoing patient management

• Possible OR first assist and/or vein harvesting (if needed)

• Coverage of outpatient cardiac cath lab consults as applicable

• Outpatient clinic duties, typically 11:00am–3:00pm, including:

  • Wound checks

  • Pre- and post-operative visits

  • Annual aneurysm evaluations

  • Wound vac placement

  • Suture and staple removal

  • Occasional telephone/video visits

• Documentation shared with supervising physician

• Weeknight call: OR emergencies only (surgical patients, ECMO initiation, pericardial window)

• Weekend call: 24-hour coverage (7a–7a) for OR emergencies only

• Possible weekend inpatient rounding for discharge orders and care coordination

• Possible coordination of video consults with thoracic surgery specialists in Pittsburgh; all orders and transfers managed by the attending or thoracic surgery team

• Monday–Friday

• Hospital and clinic-based

• Call coverage possible if the need arises

• Board Certified or truly Board Eligible NP or PA

• Post-training experience in Cardiac Surgery required

• Inpatient and outpatient experience required

• Vein harvesting and/or OR assist experience strongly preferred
