Job Summary:

Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the WMCHealth Network, is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant (Bachelor's or Master’s degree, NCCPA certified, NY State licensed, some clinical experience preferred) for busy academic nephrology practice. This position encompasses all aspects of in- and out-patient care, including renal transplant, hemodialysis, and chronic kidney disease. The position is located in Mid-Westchester County in the beautiful Hudson Valley.

The individual we seek should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment of diverse patient acuities, and rapidly changing clinical scenarios. The practitioner should derive satisfaction from tending to both medical and emotional needs of a very sick patient population.

Responsibilities:

The PA works under the direction and supervision of experienced physicians, but would have much independence in decision making and practice style. Since the hospital is a medical school teaching and house staff training facility, the PA should be comfortable interacting with students, residents and fellowship trainees, as well as with a diverse cadre of allied health professionals and consulting services.

Duties may include coverage of both inpatients and outpatients. For in-patients, under the supervision of an attending nephrologist, the PA will manage all aspects of hospital-based care, including assisting with consultations, managing in-patient dialysis, diagnostic work-ups and treatment plans as directed by the supervising nephrologist, as well as coordinating with dialysis nurses and other hospital services.

Out-patient responsibilities may include weekly rounding in dialysis units, coordinating with dialysis unit staff and physicians, assisting physicians in management of related problems and illnesses, medication renewals, participation in regular care-plan meetings, taking medical histories and performing physical examinations, as well as ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic test results.

The PA will be expected to formulate diagnostic impressions, develop and implement treatment plans, and communicate these findings and plans to the supervising physicians. The PA will monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, the prescription of pharmacological agents and treatments, and non-pharmacological therapies. The PA will also provide counseling and education to meet patient needs.

Shift/Status:

This is a full-time position in which some of the PA's working hours may occasionally be spent on weekend coverage, alongside an attending physician and a fellow, on the inpatient renal service.

Requirements:

The applicant must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. The applicant must have the ability to manage time and stress effectively and adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting. Strong computer skills in an Electronic Medical Record are also expected. Experience in dialysis and/or general nephrology or hospital medicine is a strong plus, but on-site training may be available for an appropriate candidate. The salary is commensurate with experience.
