Job Summary

The ideal candidate will teach two Math courses throughout the academic year in the University Math curriculum; hire, orient, and train part-time professional math tutors; assist in the training of Math peer tutors; and tutor all university students in Math courses both individually and in groups. They will collaborate with the Math faculty and Math Coordinator to provide Math workshops for all students, including international students. S/he is encouraged to participate in the development of on-line instruction in Math courses independently and in collaboration with Math faculty. The Assistant Director will also develop, coordinate, and score on-line Math Placement Exam for incoming students.

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Hire, orient, train, and supervise 2-3 part-time hourly professional Math tutors
  • Provide tutoring support for students individually and in group sessions throughout the academic semesters, including summer sessions
  • Teach two (2) math classes throughout an academic year
  • In colloboration with the Math Department and facuty, offer weekly workshops and review sessions for Math courses from the remedial level through Calculus
  • Develop, score and oversee online Math Placement for incoming students, including both first year students and new transfer students
  • Meet individually with any student who has concerns regarding their math placement
  • Participation at the Rams Resource Fair and New Student Orientations – both Summer and Winter
  • Assess math tutoring effectiveness and student success. Coordinate with Academic Success Center and faculty in promoting the utilization of math support throughout the academic year
  • Engage in curriculum development, including research and pilot implementation of online math learning and support
  • Attend all Math Department Meeting and College of Humanities & Science Faculty meetings, when invited
  • Work as a collaborative member of the Academic Success Center team in student retention and success
  • Follow up on all Starfish alerts and outreach to students who have received a math support referral

Education:

Master’s Degree required in quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Computer Science or Physical Science)

AND

Experience:

  • 3-5 years teaching in a university setting in Math
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in tutoring Math courses from the remedial level through Calculus II

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):

  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Knowledge of math transfer credit, college transcripts, AP credit and IB credit awarding.
