Seeking an Infectious Disease APP to join the team in San Antonio, Texas.

The APP will work Monday through Friday 8:00 to 4:00 on campus to provide inpatient management of general medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, anemia and stable chronic kidney disease under the direction of the physicians. The physicians will direct the TB therapy and do not expect the candidates to have any prior knowledge of TB treatment. The APP will also assist in taking calls from home one weekend per month.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists in collecting patient histories at the time of admission.
  • Rounds on patients in the hospital daily Monday through Friday.
  • Maintains appropriate records, and prepares charts for review and counter signature by a physician.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize acute, critical events, responds accordingly and escalates to supervising physician.
  • Coordinates, directs and implements the patient plan of care.
  • Rounds daily with nursing staff to review acute events and the patient care plan.
  • Rounds with nursing and other patient care staff as part of multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Monitors the treatment program of the patient to inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information.
  • Works with staff to provide the highest quality patient care.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

This is a unique and premier in-patient facility created to care for patients with tuberculosis. Patients are admitted to the program when they are experiencing complications with therapy or when they have drug resistant disease. The facility was built to support patient treatment and medical care while ensuring the safety and security of staff. A patient’s stay can range from a few months to up to two years. Patient rooms are designed to be more home-like than a typical hospital to accommodate longer stays, and each room is designed as an airborne isolation room with the heating and air conditioning ventilation system designed to allow the airflow to be changed from negative pressure to neutral when a patient is no longer contagious. The program plays a pivotal role in treating patients with TB in Texas as well as neighboring states, and the campus houses a TB regional training and medical consultation center funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Currently, two infectious disease physicians care for the patients in addition to teaching, students, residents and fellows. We are looking to expand our staff to include acute care nurse practitioners (APP) to meet the state’s increasing needs in TB patient care.

Our team is dedicated to helping this very special patient population, and we enjoy working in a truly multidisciplinary environment.
