The Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Palliative Care team is committed to providing compassionate, evidence based care and improving the quality of life for patients with serious illness. Our interdisciplinary team consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and chaplains. We work closely with the patient’s primary care physician and specialists to provide comprehensive coordinated care. We boast a team-oriented culture that encourages open communication and partnership to provide exceptional patient care within our facilities.

What You’ll Do:

As an integral part of the Palliative Care team, this role is dedicated to evaluating and addressing the needs of adult patients with life-threatening illnesses. The primary focus is on delivering exceptional outpatient palliative care at the Cancer Center. This position also involves strong advocacy for patients and their families, promoting healthcare improvements aimed at enhancing the quality of life for those with terminal illnesses. It requires effective collaboration with various professionals and community member, striving to ensure the highest level of wellness and comfort for patients in their care.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Performs complex assessments in diagnosing and prescribing necessary treatment and service for palliation.
  2. Coordinates Advanced Care Planning with patient and caregivers.
  3. Carries out patient care services under indirect physician supervision; monitors progress of patients, maintains records of patient's progress, and consults with supervising physician when patient's progress does not meet anticipated and/or predetermined criteria.
  4. Serves as patient and family advocates for health care changes that have the potential to improve quality of life for terminally ill people.
  5. Collaborates with other professionals and community members to ensure optimal wellness and comfort for patients.
  6. Participates in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepares statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  7. Assists in teaching students, residents and interns in complex techniques and procedures, which are unique to specific clinical setting. Provides directions and guidance to support personnel.
  8. Uphold AHWFB missions, values, and cultural commitment.
  9. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

The clinician functions under the regulatory mandate from their respective licensing organization (North Carolina Medical Board) with departmental specific credentialing from the institution.

Physician Assistant (PA) Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master's Degree preferred
  • Current North Carolina Medical Board Medical License, Certified by NCCPA
  • Prior clinical experience in palliative care and/or oncology preferred
  • CPR required
