The CEP America Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (EMPA) Fellowship was founded in 2009 at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. The Fellowship is offered to certified physician assistants interested in advancing the specialty of emergency medicine. It runs 14 months, beginning each November. In addition to hands-on and classroom training in the ED, fellows rotate through other hospital-based specialties.


The program builds upon the knowledge and clinical skills acquired during an ARC-PA accredited entry level Physician Assistant program and focuses on expanding that knowledge and refining the skills required for quality emergency care.


The Opportunity

  • Seeking physician assistants to start the fellowship program in November 2015
  • Hands-on clinical training with mentorship from a team of NCCPA certified PAs and BE/BC emergency physicians, certified by the ABEM and/or the AOBEM
  • 4 hours weekly of formal didactic training and discussion, as well as board rounds, journal club, morbidity and mortality conference, and grand round conference
  • Salary, paid time off, and health insurance benefits
  • Certification in basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), as well as a California-approved controlled substance course

Candidate Requirements

  • Each applicant should possess the following:
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Eligible for and/or possess current CA Medical Board Physician Assistant licensure
  • Applicants will be considered if CA PA license is pending, but must be fully licensed by start of program
  • Eligible for and/or possess current DEA licensure
  • Applicants will be considered if eligible for DEA license, but must be fully licensed by start of program
  • Signed statement indicating you are eligible for DEA licensure
  • If you do not have a DEA license, please speak to an EMPA program representative prior to applying for one
  • Current certification in:
    • o ACLS
    • o BLS
    • o Previous EMS/ED work experience is highly desirable but not required.

  • The 50-bed Emergency Department, the second busiest in California, sees 133,000+ annual ED patient visits where a large number are trauma cases.
