Physician Assistant – Intensivist (Night Shift)
Position Summary
The Physician Assistant Intensivist provides advanced clinical care to critically ill patients in the intensive care unit during overnight hours. Working collaboratively with the supervising intensivist physician and multidisciplinary ICU team, the PA manages acute changes in patient condition, performs critical care procedures, and ensures continuity of care throughout the night.
Key Responsibilities

Provide overnight management of critically ill ICU patients under physician supervision

Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including admissions, transfers, and cross-cover evaluations

Respond to acute clinical deterioration, emergencies, rapid response calls, and code events

Develop, implement, and adjust treatment plans for unstable and complex patients

Order, interpret, and document diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory studies

Manage ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, sedation, and vasoactive medications

Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice (e.g., central and arterial line placement, intubation assistance, chest tube management)

Communicate significant clinical changes to supervising physicians and daytime teams

Provide handoff communication to incoming day-shift providers

Collaborate with nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting services

Ensure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record

Support adherence to ICU protocols, patient safety initiatives, and quality standards
Patient Population
-
Medical, surgical, and/or specialty ICU patients
-
Conditions may include respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, multi-organ failure, trauma, and post-operative critical illness
Schedule
-
Night shift only
-
Includes weekends and holidays as required by unit coverage needs
Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

Current national certification as a Physician Assistant

Active or eligible state licensure
-
BLS and ACLS certification required
-
Prior ICU, critical care, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine experience strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong critical thinking and autonomous clinical decision-making skills

Ability to manage high-acuity patients with limited onsite specialty support

Proficiency in critical care procedures and emergency response

Excellent communication and handoff skills
-
Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high-stress environments

Overnight coverage with exposure to emergent and high-acuity clinical situations

Requires prolonged standing, lifting, and manual dexterity
