An inpatient Cardiothoracic Surgery NP is needed to support a high-volume CV/CT program at a leading medical center in Tacoma, WA. This role includes OR first assist, peri-operative management, ICU and step-down care, and 24/7 call coverage. The provider will manage complex cardiac and thoracic cases, including robotic-assisted procedures, and work closely with a multidisciplinary surgical team. This assignment supports ongoing coverage due to staff retirement and requires strong independent clinical skills in a fast-paced inpatient setting.
Job Responsibilities
Provide pre- and post-operative evaluation and management for cardiothoracic patients
Manage patients in the ICU and step-down units, including daily rounds and care coordination
Perform and assist with robotic-assisted thoracic procedures and minimally invasive techniques
Conduct endoscopic vein harvest and radial artery harvest
Respond to emergent floor consults and procedures (e.g., chest tubes, arterial lines)
Complete discharge summaries and post-operative documentation
Provide 24-hour call coverage, including nights and weekends, carrying a pager
See urgent/walk-in patients when the primary surgeon is unavailable
Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and OR staff to ensure high-quality patient care
Qualifications
3+ years CV/CT surgery experience
Robotics experience required
WA license (IMLC considered)
ACLS, BLS, DEA
Clean malpractice
Working Hours
1:4 weekend call
Typical daytime hours 7:00 AM–3:00 PM (variable)
On-call days may run 10–12+ hrs
Pager call 24 hrs when on call
Skills
Proficiency as OR first assist for CABG, valve, aortic, and thoracic procedures
Strong experience with robotic-assisted thoracic surgery and minimally invasive techniques
Competence in ICU and step-down patient management
Ability to perform endoscopic vein harvest and radial artery harvest
Skilled in managing emergent bedside procedures (chest tubes, arterial lines)
Effective clinical decision-making in high-acuity inpatient settings
Strong collaboration and communication with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams
Proficiency with EPIC EMR and accurate clinical documentation
