The Department of Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery Division is pleased to announce the opening of a position for a Nurse Practitioner - Specialty Care or Physician Assistant - Specialty Care. This individual will act as a physician extender for the collaborating surgeons in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division.

Candidate will be working in various settings, with most the focus being on the inpatient units and intensive care unit. Candidate will be involved in perioperative management of patient, consultations, history, and physicals for both inpatient and outpatient, discharge summaries, and patient teaching. The provider will provide care for hospitalized patients in both the pre-operative and post-operative settings. The Advanced Practice Provider will interact directly with attending physicians, residents, and medical students of MUHC. The Advanced Practice Provider will assist in performing patient histories, physicals, and discharge summaries.

The candidate will share rotating weekend call.

Cases currently are purely cardiac, such routine CABG (both off and on pumps), valve repair/replacement, aortic aneurysm, and dissection. Cardiac tumors, arrhythmia surgery, epicardia ablation, occasional ECMOs, no surgical VAD / heart transplant at present time.

In addition the candidate will:

  • Work collaboratively with surgeons and physicians in the Cardio Thoracic-Surgery Services Clinic and assist in a multidisciplinary practice for the treatment of cardio-thoracic surgical related diagnosis.
  • Assist in the evaluation and assessment of potential surgical candidates.
  • May participate in the Missouri Telehealth Network by providing Telemedicine return clinic appointments via polycom connection.
  • Assist in the identification of trends related to patients and participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Help guide the development and implementation of structure, process, and outcomes standards.
  • Actively participate in clinical and cardio-thoracic research, as needed.
  • 1st Assist and Vein harvesting experience required.
