Job Description: Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Overview: As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive healthcare services to American Indian and Alaska Native communities served by the Indian Health Service (IHS), specifically within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS). Working within the outpatient departments of healthcare facilities such as the Pinon Health Center and Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, you will deliver primary and urgent care services to pediatric patients, contributing to the mission of raising the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of these populations to the highest level.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide outpatient Pediatric primary care and walk-in urgent care services to patients aged 0-21 years in accordance with established standards of care.
  2. Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including physical examinations, medical history reviews, and diagnostic tests as needed.
  3. Formulate and implement patient management plans, including prescribing medications, treatments, and therapies, and providing patient education and counseling.
  4. Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure holistic patient care and coordinate referrals to other healthcare providers and facilities as necessary.
  5. Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic health records (EHR) using the Chinle Service Unit’s EHR system, documenting patient encounters, assessments, treatments, and follow-up care.
  6. Participate in departmental and medical staff meetings, adhering to Chinle Service Unit’s Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules & Regulations.
  7. Comply with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations of the Indian Health Service, Navajo Area, and Chinle Service Unit, as well as professional standards of practice and licensing board requirements.
  8. Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity in delivering care to diverse populations, particularly American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Qualifications:

  1. Completion of an accredited Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program.
  2. Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) in Family Practice and/or Acute Care.
  3. Current, valid, and unrestricted licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in any state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.
  4. Board certification with the American Nurses Credentialing Center or equivalent credentialing organization appropriate to the specialty.
  5. Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license with schedule types II-V.
  6. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications are highly recommended.
  7. Ability to meet the health requirements and conditions of employment, including immunizations and medical evaluations.
  8. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  9. Cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  10. Commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Work Schedule:

  • Regular work hours are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
