A locum opportunity is available for an experienced Orthopedic Surgery Nurse Practitioner to support a busy surgical service in Coos Bay, Oregon. This role offers a dynamic blend of operating room assistance, inpatient rounding, emergency department coverage, and procedural care. The position is ideal for a clinically confident NP who thrives in hands-on surgical environments and values autonomy while collaborating closely with orthopedic surgeons.
This is a full-time, daytime position with shared night and weekend call responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities
• Perform daily inpatient rounds and document clinical findings and treatment plans
• Assist in surgery, including first assist, tissue closures, and application of orthopedic devices
• Serve as primary orthopedic call provider for emergency department and inpatient consults
• Order and interpret diagnostic studies including X-ray, CT, MRI, EMG, and bone scans
• Perform orthopedic procedures such as:
o Joint and bursa aspirations
o Fracture and dislocation reductions
o Injections (joints, tendons, trigger points, bursa)
o Cast, splint, and brace applications
o Wound management, debridement, incision & drainage
o Hardware and K-wire removal
• Prepare discharge summaries, histories, and physicals
• Utilize Epic EMR for order entry and documentation
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and quality initiatives
Qualifications
• Active Oregon NP License
• Eligible for Medical Staff or Allied Health privileges
• Availability for full-time assignment
• Ability to start ASAP
• NPDB Self-Query required at submission
• CAQH profile required at time of offer
• Comfortable with both clinic and hospital-based orthopedic care
Working Hours
• On-call coverage:
o 1–2 nights per week
o Every third weekend
• Work week: Sunday – Saturday
• Occasional holiday, night, and weekend rotation as required
Skills
• Emergency and inpatient orthopedic evaluation
• Fracture and dislocation management
• Procedural proficiency in injections, aspirations, and wound care
• Strong clinical decision-making in high-acuity settings
• Epic EMR documentation
• Ability to work independently in fast-paced environments
